My Baby is Growing Up

I am not really ready, but are we ever really ready?

Today we had our first official college tour with our oldest. We have visited several college campuses in the past, but have never signed up for an official tour. Today things felt real. We are aware that the time is near and it just feels weird and normal and weird.

My baby is growing up! Now if I could only slow down time. For now, I’ll just enjoy the moment.

Life is good. Love this life.

I am HFSS – Happy For Simple Stuff!

Remember how I shared that I am seeking rhythm to my life? It’s coming!! I can feel it.  I like to do a lot of stuff and fill my days and I just added full time work to the mix. Now I need help to do it all, and I’m not that good at asking, but I’m practicing and it’s working.

I got up early this morning and enjoyed snuggles and coffee in bed before making French toast for breakfast for everyone and prepping dinner.

I then got an hour+ of work in before the kids went off to school. My friend dropped them off for me today, which gave me extra time for which I was thankful.

I then picked up the house a bit and started a load of laundry before meeting my friend for a hike at our favorite place.  I asked my new work partner for help, while I was gone and she was a Godsend!  I enjoyed a gorgeous and slightly wet, and slightly muddy  trek, out in nature, finding joy being out in nature.

I was able to work for another several hours afterwards before leaving again for the first swim meet of the season.

I am thankful for a flexible job that allows me to work and play and be with my family and swirl it all together.  The swim meet ran longer than I expected and I had to ask for help at my volunteer job and also of my husband to start the dinner I had earlier prepped. I was very happy to be able to be with my kids, enjoying their competitive sports and sitting with my friends in the bleachers.

I came home with the big kids to find dinner cooking on the stove, with my husband in the kitchen and I jumped for joy. Literally! I asked for help and he delivered. HFSS.

Because he was able to help with dinner, the big kids had a healthy meal and were able to come home, eat and run again.  Christian is able to drive them now so I got to sit home and enjoy a quick meal with my honey. HFSS.

This is the best day. I love how things flowed and I found a rhythm to do it all with a little help from my friends and family. Now, back to work! I have a few things to wrap up before getting some rest.

How was your rhythm today? Did you live it up?

Life is good!

Rain Walk

I am on a retreat this weekend and yesterday it was pouring rain all day, with high winds.  Part of the retreat was to go for a 30 minute walk on your own and to be aware of  your breath and what you notice. Some chose to walk indoors, while others chose to brave the elements.

I decided to walk in the rain and loved the entire experience, even getting soaked. I was so in the moment and loved all the feelings, sights, and sounds. I even splashed in the puddles and walked across the flooded labyrinth.

I don’t know if I would have chosen to go out walking on my own in the rain and was thankful for the invitation and “permission” to create space in this way.

Living in the Sunshine

I stopped to see the beach and to listen to the waves for 5 minutes before heading home, because I was really “busy” today.

We were going to sit in the hot tub and drink our coffee, but we didn’t. We went for a walk with the kids instead.

We were going to go for a drive to test out my friend’s new car, but we didn’t. We sat on the patio and watched the hawks circling overhead instead.

We were going to make lunch, but rather we put out fruit and meat and cheese and told everyone to help themselves.

We joyfully watched the kids play all day, appreciating them still being kids. We relaxed in the sunshine and talked the day away and there was nothing else I would have rather done. We were very busy, being.

We flowed and danced and loved being together side by side, enjoying our kids and our friendship and living our happily ever after in the sunshine. This is it. This is my version of the best life. Thank you my friend, for sharing your weekend and family and home and thoughts with me. xo

How did you live it up today? What does your happily ever after look like?  Be well, BeLOVErs.

#TBT: Throw Back Thursday

I took Christian to get his hair cut today and as he was sitting in the chair, I was remembering back to the days when he didn’t really like to get his hair cut and how he looked forward to the lollipop afterwards. He doesn’t mind anymore and skips the treats.

I love seeing old pictures and remembering things I have forgotten and seeing the good ol days. I also love seeing other peoples’ old memories posted on Facebook and tagged as #TBT.

I quickly glanced through some of my old pics that were available digitally from my phone and found this picture, that is 12 years old!

It caught my eye and had me feeling all the feels. I remembered how much Christian was into Bob the Builder. Juliana used to only go to sleep with her little soft blanket. I loved the colorful, small blanket that my Grandma crocheted with what looks like remnants of left over yarn. The long, colorful snake used to bring hours of laughter as Christian and Craig ran around together through the house with it, making up silly sayings. Juliana and Christian used to share a room and this was their House shaped loft bed, which they loved.

One picture, so many memories. When you’re in the moment, you don’t really see it the same way as 12 years later.  This #TBT thing is fun.

What picture brings you back in time, reflecting on good times?

Live it up now and take pictures so you can smile again on Thursdays.

Life is good.

Experiences or Stuff?

Is there any topic that you’re really interested in? I love reading about happiness, mindfulness and positivity stories. Did you know that you can set up Google Alerts that will monitor the web and will send you links to content related to your search terms?  I love this and thought I should share this with you. It’s like receiving a little knowledge gift in your inbox everyday. I used to receive knowledge management links when I worked in this field and loved seeing the latest and greatest news and research. Just type “google alerts” in your search bar and they’ll walk you through the simple setup.

I am preparing a program about the gift of happiness and looked through some of the research I’ve collected on the topic. One of the sections is about whether money can buy happiness. And of course, the answer is, it depends. I love this answer, by the way, for many questions, like when your kids ask you whether they can have x,y or z, you can buy yourself some time in deciding your reply by saying it depends.  I also like answering with a question and having them try to think for themselves. But that’s another topic.

So back to this money and happiness thing…they say after about $75,000, your needs are met and more money doesn’t necessarily bring more happiness.  Let’s say you have more money and your food and shelter needs are met, how should you spend that extra money to bring you happiness?

They say that spending money on experiences will bring you more long term happiness than spending money on stuff. When you spend money on something fun, you get the joy and anticipation of waiting for the event and then you get to enjoy the actual experience. And then afterwards you have the joy and excitement from the memory you’ve created and the stories you get to share. Plus, most people don’t compare their experiences or feel that someone else has a better experience than themselves, so there is a more complete sense of joy.

The other thing about material acquisitions is that we adapt to the thing quickly and then want the next thing and don’t stay satisfied for long. We also tend to compare what we buy with what others have bought and this sometimes leads to dissatisfaction.  For example, if I buy a new iPhone 5 and then my friend buys a new iPhone6+, I might feel like mine isn’t good enough, just from knowing that my friend has one that is better even though I was perfectly happy with my own until I compared myself to others even though I and you never, ever do that, right?  I might want to have the iPhone195 just to feel superior and that mine is the best. But you know the next iPhoneMillenium would be right around the corner and lead to my quick disillusionment. So stop with the stuff and the quick fix that needs another quick fix and spend your money on play and fun instead, and be sure to share that fun with someone.  Experiences, especially shared ones with loved ones, create memories and stories and that’s what gives life meaning.

Another guru says that the secret to the good life are good relationships. So see? I think we’re on to something.

Pick a loved one, a BFF or special someone and plan something for you both to experience together and it doesn’t have to be fancy. Enjoy the anticipation before you go, have fun together, share your story and live happily ever after.

Took Our Time

Today we took our time to begin another adventure. We slept in and drank coffee while looking at the newspaper. Afterwards, Jeff and I worked out and showered and got dressed for the day and began packing and cleaning.  I have to tell you that it felt so good not to rush and to not let stress in.  This is the best way to travel.

We all worked together packing bags and cleaning and loading the car. We stopped on the road when we felt like it, ate a snack in the middle of the day and truly enjoyed our car ride. The kids had their headphones on and it was quiet and peaceful in our living room on wheels.

Happy Eve before New Year’s Eve!

Photo Booth Fun

I absolutely get a kick out of these every time. I love being silly and watching my family and friends be crazy, wild and free too. It’s good for my soul.

Thank you R&D for hosting a fun and festive Christmas party this past weekend. We definitely lived it up!

I hope you get a laugh out of our silliness too and make time to play with your beloveds.
