Connections – Life, Gratitude, Death

Are you living it up, laughing out loud and loving yourself?  I sure hope so.  If you’re looking for some inspiring daily thoughts, check out The Buddhist Boot Camp on Facebook.  I love the way this guy expresses himself and thinks about life and love and simplicity without being too preachy.

Everyday when I read what he posts, I smile. I even bought his book and hope to read it one day. Right now it sits by my bed and I’m learning through osmosis. 😉

Here’s a quote from just the other day:  “Your job isn’t to go around trying to save people, or to drag them kicking and screaming with high hopes that in the end they will thank you… all you can do is live a healthy life yourself, trusting that those with eyes to see will pay attention and save themselves. Your life is your message, so LIVE your message. Actions are way louder than words.” – Timber Hawkeye, The Buddhist Bootcamp

I took Christian in for a physical today so that he can be cleared to play sports. As the doctor was sharing some ways to keep himself safe as a teen, one of the topics he talked about were the dangers of texting and driving. He mentioned that his parents should model good behavior and that he’s watching what I do and learning. I listened, not that I text and drive, but I do pick up my phone at red lights, which I wouldn’t want him to do. I have to practice so that young eyes that are watching me and quietly paying attention will hopefully follow my good example.

Back to Timber Hawkeye, today he shared a link to his TEDx Talk from 2012 about successful, happy people and that the secret to happiness is being grateful and feeling gratitude.  I believe this to be true and have been hearing this a lot lately in different forms.

Glennon, over at Momastery, also beautifully expressed her gratitude for the gifts in her life today on her blog. Check it out  – Give Me Gratitude or Give Me Debt.  I think you’ll enjoy her perspective and I love her gentle reminder and how she lives her message out and helps others.

Another secret to happiness is helping others and getting out of our own heads.

Leo Babauta captured this brilliantly today and share’s a little secret on how to find our life purpose which is linked to getting away from your own self-thoughts and leaning towards helping others. I loved this:  Zen Habits – Life Purpose.

All of these little connections happened today. I think I needed them as I sat and felt extreme sadness for Robin Williams and his family. I wondered how someone so successful on the outside could feel such sadness and depression on the inside. I wish that someone or something could have helped save his soul and that the laughter he brought to so many could have been reflected back onto him and filled him up.  I wonder what, if anything, could have helped him before it was too late, even though I know that depression and addiction are complicated. I wish that when one experiences such pain, that there were successful and easy ways to help them become emotionally resilient without them having to turn to painful alternatives to cope.

Rest in peace, Robin Williams and may your family find comfort and healing and be surrounded by love in the coming days and weeks.  Rest in peace, Zach.

Wishing you peace and love.

Happy Feet

I have wide, ugly feet, but I’m ok with them, especially after a pedicure or when they are partially buried in the sand and in the ocean.

These are my happy feet, not that feet should really be photographed, but maybe just notice the happy sand and bubbles and shells and visualize the cold water swirling around them.

We stopped at the beach on our way home from an event because I had a strong desire to look out over the ocean and to dip my toes in the water.

When I’m at the beach, I am content and my mind rests. I feel small in comparison to the big ocean and this is comforting to me.

I loved the sites and sounds and even the smells. I loved watching a paddle board surfer, a little boy learning to surf, as well as watching the bigger kids learning too.

Home Improvement Committee

I am the Home Improvement Committee.

I can’t sit still for long.

Now that we’re home again from all our vacations, I’m busy reorganizing, redecorating, decluttering and dreaming of open, redesigned spaces.

Today we bought new bedding for Juliana’s room. I didn’t take any pictures, but after driving all over town, we found our favorite set at Kohl’s. She chose a dusty teal color with grey accent sheets and pillows. Now we just have to pick out paint and a yellow pillow to balance out the details.

I also bought a new quilt for our bedroom. It’s been at least 15 years since I bought some new linens. We are loving it so far. We also need to get some accent pillows too to freshen things up.

After shopping for the new, I spent several hours clearing out the old! I tend to collect stuff just in case I might need it again!! Our garage is clear of all the camping gear and suitcases from travel that has been accumulating. Thank God!

How was your day! Did you learn something new? Did you improve anything? I’m sure you did. Have a good night!!

Balance

20140808-214403-78243950.jpg
This has been one of my favorite beach and river activities this summer. I love balancing rocks and making rock sculptures, seeing how high we can build them before they topple over.

How many things can we balance before we are out of tilt? Hmmm… Something to think about.

Sometimes we can carry a lot and sometimes we can’t, but that’s ok because we can always start again if things start to fall.

That’s a beautiful thing.

Is Summer Over Yet?

I love summer. It’s my favorite season.

20140807-213248-77568084.jpg

I love the unstructured nature of it with flexibility and togetherness and ice cream and water play until I don’t anymore and I long for the next season to bring back a breath of fresh air and structure again and some alone time for ME!! Have I told you that I haven’t worked out hardly at all this summer? Maybe that’s why I feel cranky and fat!

I never look forward to the fall and the early morning alarm clock and demands for lunches to be made and forms to be filled out and homework to be completed. I don’t miss that part at all.

I do look forward to having an expected routine again and to have the kids separated in different schools and not bickering with one another or trying to get out of chores or manipulating a way and finding or begging for a reason to have more screen time.

I’m done. I’m baked.

I’m ready and thankful for all the teachers that care for and teach my babies every week day and give me a break. I love you!! And I love my kids and our wonderful life journey we’re sharing…I’m just ready for them and I to go out and learn by ourselves and to come back and share our experiences maybe over dinner and maybe not all the hours in between if you know what I mean.

School starts in less than two weeks, but who’s counting? Are you ready too?

Jump In

We were all hanging out in the backyard tonight when I saw the trampoline sitting there with no one on it and decided I had to give it a try.

I was a bit afraid at first, that I might fall off or twist an ankle, but I was curious as to why kids like them so much and I wanted to know for myself. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on a trampoline.

I took a few tentative bounces and got comfortable and didn’t pee in my pants. Woohoo!! So I jumped a bit more and a little higher and laughed up and down. I threw my phone to Christian and he snapped a few pics of me.

I was laughing so hard. I think everyone over 25 should go ahead and jump!

Jump for joy.

Best Place for Selfies

We walked around Chicago today and discovered the cool Cloud Gate in Millennium Park. This is the best place to take selfies and to see yourself and to play with your reflection, as well as the reflection of the Windy City.

We had fun posing together and laughing at the different shots and angles. I love photography!!

The Bean

20140804-175041-64241038.jpg
This is the coolest one – you see all of us together and to the left is the reflection of our backsides and the city. I love this and didn’t even know we were getting a three-for-one.

20140804-175252-64372726.jpg
I sat on the underside of the bean and looked back while I snapped a selfie and got this. How fun you guys! I swear, I don’t think I’ll ever grow up. I was curious and mesmerized by how the mirrored reflections were working and kept playing under that magical bean, even as it started to rain and my family was left waiting for me.

Thank you to Juliana for sharing some of her photos with me. She’s a good photographer and has a good eye.

Life is good.

If you get to Chicago, I hope you get a chance to go out and play at the cloud gate too.

Michigan

I love Michigan! I am so happy to be visiting our friends Megan and Joe and their family for a long weekend.

We enjoyed the great weather outdoors and explored Saugatuck today. We didn’t really care what we did, as we just wanted to do something together and see a bit of the state and walk around.

The highlights for me were seeing the kids splash around in Lake Michigan and catching fireflies.

Our friends Kris and Pat always vacation in this town and I was curious to see what it was like. It was very quaint and I could see why they like coming here with their family. I just wish we had more time to spend on the water.

20140803-231333-83613929.jpg
After exploring a bit of the town and having a bite to eat, we traveled along to West County Park on the Lake Michigan Shore. Here we skipped rocks, played in the water, and built rock sculptures, seeing who could pile the most together before they toppled over.

And to end the day, the kids made my night by catching and releasing fireflies that just fascinated me.

It’s the simple things in life that make me happy – like time spent together with good friends.

Traveling

What’s your favorite type of travel?

Do you like to travel by car? By plane? By boat?

When you go on vacation do you travel someplace new or do you tend to go to the same place every time?

Do you seek out something entertaining or educational or relaxing or maybe thrill seeking?

There are so many different types of travel. Sometimes I like to just think about that and all the possibilities.

We have traveled to so many places near and far, new and old.

What I’ve discovered is that I like to travel with my family and with friends or to visit friends where we create shared histories and connections. I love any vacation that includes time in the water, whether it be a pool, a lake, or the ocean. These are the most meaningful vacations to me.

This week we are visiting our family and friends in Chicago and Michigan. Everyone is having fun with the cousins and with the friends we consider family!

Life is good!
