Carmel-By-The-Sea

One of the things I loved most about being an expat was my sense of adventure and curiosity for learning and exploring. I was never bored. I want to keep that spirit with me in my now “normal” life and continue to explore the beauty that surrounds me.

California is one of the best places on earth! Today brought us to Carmel with Michele and her kids. To watch our kids just play together and enjoy one another is such a joy in itself, not to mention the beautiful surroundings and just being with one of my best friends. Thank you Michele for inviting me to join you this week!!

Life is good!

Expat Best Practices

Today I was inspired by this article written about what we can learn from expats. Here is the link:

http://www.theage.com.au/travel/blogs/the-backpacker/what-we-could-all-learn-from-expats-20130711-2psde.html

Maybe I’ve shared this already but I can’t remember. One of the things that being an expat did for me was give me a life sentence… kind of like a death sentence but in reverse.  I felt like I was given a gift to live in the moment, to be fully aware of what I wanted to do with my life and to do it right now and not wait.

When we were getting ready to move overseas, I stopped being tired and busy. I made time to do whatever I planned or dreamed and did it. We went to Hawaii and came back the day before our anniversary. We then drove 6 hours to Southern California the next day on our anniversary to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. Before, I would never have done something like this. I would have used the excuse that we just got back from a trip and we were exhausted, and it was our anniversary and blah, blah, blah.  Instead, we went. Just like that. And enjoyed our family and the journey. This type of event and thinking happened over and over again before we left.

And then we continued living like this the entire year we were expats. We lived and worked like we were on a permanent vacation. We didn’t know when our time would end, so we kept doing whatever our hearts and minds could dream of doing. We lived it up. My new motto.  Sleep when you’re dead. My old motto that I still carry. I have lots of these little statements. Maybe I’ll make a list of them one day.  They help guide me and remind me to live it up, love it out and have no fear.

That kind of connects to the life/death sentence. None of us know how long we’ll live, but we live our lives sometimes like we have forever and we don’t. So I chose to live it up now while I can, while we’re healthy and curious and have a thirst for experience and connection. We should live this way…fully present and aware, adapting and changing and growing every new minute.  What a gift of life we all have… it’s up to us how we choose to spend our minutes.

So back to the article… I’ll summarize what I found to be the best practices that The Backpacker shared about expats:

Expats are:

* Friendly, open people eager to make new friends immediately without pretension

* Fun to be around. They are curious and want to know your story and want to know about their new culture and land

* Adventurous, risk takers, and gutsy! Expats have to leave their home land, pack up their belongings and start new. This is uncomfortable and they do it anyway.  I love this – do it anyway mentality…so what if you’re a bit scared, unsure… try it anyway

* Try new things – new food, new languages, new rituals

* Have an attitude to “Just Do It” like Nike says – stop thinking about it and planning it and just do it

* Live life like you’re on a permanent holiday. Think about that… isn’t that a great idea? We have to do the work and study, but then what? Play!! Travel!! Explore!! Enjoy!!

* Love to hang out and socialize with friends, living it up

* Tend to enjoy themselves and welcome the revolving world of friends with a culture of openness. I love this and live this statement.

I miss being overseas and having the title of a current expat. I liked the experience and the friendships I made and miss them so much, even if everyone is away on summer holiday. I plan to incorporate these best practices into my daily life, living a more normal day to day life back in suburbia. I plan to keep living it up, loving it out and enjoying this beautiful world every day. I plan to fight the negativity I see in the media and continue to spread joy and love every where I go.  Thanks for joining me and sharing the journey.

Thank you Christine for happy hour and my delicious succotash salad. Thank you Ling for the gorgeous Dahlias from your yard and the steam buns for Charlie. Thank you to all 6 kids who came over for dinner and filled my house with joy.  I love this life right now.  😉

Day 13: Lucky 13

20120713-002524.jpg

When I found out we were moving, I decided I was going to do everything I’ve been wanting to do before we actually left. That has been the biggest gift of all – to actually enjoy every minute of where I am right now. And I have and I AM and I still have 12 more days to soak it all in before our next adventure begins. What are you doing with your minutes?

Today was full and fun and I even got some work done! Michele and I took the kids to Sausalito to enjoy lunch on the boat, and to play with the kids on the beach. They loved finding and catching little sea creatures and moon jelly fish. Michele brought her paddle board and let me try it out. She has a Surftech board that is very stable and glides through the water. I liked trying another board and think the next board I get will be one that moves quickly through the water.

After our time on the beach, we went into town for coffee and Lappert’s ice cream. It was beautiful and sunny in Sausalito yet foggy and cold crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. I never tire of seeing the beauty of the bridge. We didn’t have a plan or schedule and the day just flowed.

Afterward, we drove back to Michele’s and she took C to a Palo Alto Play and let the kids swim after dark. I was lucky enough to drive over to Redwood City to check out the awesome new fall jewelry line from Stella & Dot. I don’t know how Blythe and team keep creating new designs that are so artistic and cool! I want them all! I loved running into friends – Vickie, Debbie and Kristen. Vickie gave me a gift, which is one of the new layering pieces just because! How lucky AM I? Thanks, Vickie!! I’m going to miss you… Debbie and Kristen too!

And to top of the minutes, Jeff was having a meeting right down the road. We were able to meet up for a quick dinner date! That never happens!! We enjoyed the break and I was able to still get back to pick up C by 8:30 pm but he was still swimming! Guess he’s enjoying every minute too. Michele and I looked over the new Stella and Dot Look Book and I just ordered my new samples! Wanna come see them? Stop by next week… They should be here by Monday!!

Life is good… Enjoy your minutes and make them count!!

Day 47: Work Hard, Play Hard

Today I had to work hard and fast to get everything done so I could play again! You know, work hard, play hard. That’s my motto!

J was so sweet and she handmade invitations for C’s birthday. We hand delivered to all we could.

We planned our going away celebration and sent out an Evite. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to say goodbye to as many friends as possible before we move.

April and I did a Costco run together – gathering food for the week and a play date- gotta love that! We left all the kids together to play. It’s so nice having big kids!

Jeff confirmed the moving company and we scheduled our packing/move date. It’s official… We’re really moving!!

After cleaning up the house and packing my bags (I’m getting really good at this!), I filled up the car with gas and picked up Susanne to head to beautiful, Carmel!

Michele planned a weekend away for us at her new house and how could we let her down? Susanne and I had to come and celebrate with her and make sure the patio wasn’t too windy and that the new couches were comfy. So far, so good! No complaints!! And we’re good friends like that.

We enjoyed a perfectly, snack-y, appetizer dinner with wine and port and watched the sunset. Life is good!!

I would normally not pack so much fun into one month, but when you’re moving and want to do it all before you’re gone, you have to do it all when the timing and opportunity are aligned. I’m grateful that I have such a supportive husband and family. Thanks, guys!!

What are you doing just for you this month?

Day 68: TGIF

Don’t you love Fridays?   It’s one of my favorite days of the week. Everyone is happy from finishing up the week and excited, anticipating the weekend.

Today I enjoyed C’s field trip to the Magic Garden. We walked and took the City Bus with 29 kids and several chaperones and his teacher. The kids had a great time touching and tasting and feeling and smelling all the wonders that surrounded them, including worms, nests, chickens, snails, nasturtiums, and fruiting mulberry bushes to name a few.

Looking up at the underbelly of the shade tree – so pretty!

Have you ever seen an Almond Tree?

These roses were beautiful climbing roses, but without much scent. The kids enjoyed walking through the gateway and into the magical garden. I liked it too.

Look… April and I actually got to hang out today! Thank goodness for field trips!!  🙂

From the city bus stop with the second graders, I walked half way back to school and then left the kids with the other chaperones so that I could run ahead to meet the school bus that was bringing J home from Science Camp. I was so excited to see her and have her back in my nest. I’m not ready to let her go, even though I know she’s growing up and I have to let out the leash a little more and more. It felt really good to reel her back in, close to me. We all missed her and our family dynamic was just not the same without her.  Now we just have to wait for Jeff to get back from London to have us all back together. I’m happy for him though, that he gets to spend time with his brother before heading home again.

And to finish off the day, we had a quick visit and dinner with Michele and the kids. We were all so tired that we made it an early night. She had this great little gadget on her counter that made us laugh and smile and maybe you will too.  In case you ever wonder, here’s a little Emergency Affirmation you can give yourself – when you press the smiley face, it plays a drum roll and tells you that you are amazing! Something everyone should hear at least once a day!!  Go ahead, press it! You are Amazing!! xo

Day 90 – It’s Raining…So What?

It was raining a bit this morning so it was too wet to play my tennis
match, but just right for a hike.  Typically I would use the rain as
an excuse to hibernate, but not today.  Michele would have been so
disappointed if I wimped out. You see, she “made” me step out of my
comfort zone to hike in the rain once before, even before I knew we
were moving to Holland.  I would probably never have considered hiking
in the rain if it wasn’t for her.  Plus, I needed to see her because
we’ve both been so busy that I hadn’t seen my hiking friend since
before our Amsterdam visit.  So off we went, in the rain and had a
great non-stop chat and hike through Rancho San Antonio.  The trails
were pretty empty and we saw a wild male turkey preening for the
atention of three females.  Very cool. Thanks, Michele…  I loved
today with you and can’t wait to go again!! xo

Day 96 – Silicon Valley

I love this place! It was such a gorgeous day out by the Stanford Dish. Hoover tower is out in the distance, as well as San Francisco Bay and surrounding cities. It was so hot though, but totally worth it to be outside. I love coming up here and hiking and chatting and admiring the views. Time flies. I have so many great memories from here – like when Stacey was pregnant with Miss C and we’d walk early in the morning before I went to work. And family walks, and fireworks before they put up fences, and my 40th birthday with Michele, and now today with Marcia. What a great day!! Don’t you want to walk down this path with me? Or maybe you’d rather walk up? Can’t wait to go again. xo
