Day 268: Alkmaar

I don’t know what I liked more, the road trip with my girlfriends filling every seat of my mini-van, or the actual visit to Alkmaar wandering with friends. I think I liked both! Too bad I didn’t get a picture.

We went to see the cheese market and walk around the quaint city, wandering from store to store and street to street, eventually stopping for lunch before heading back to pick up the kids from school. Thousands of visitors from all over the world visit to see the cheese market filled with cheese and hauling cheese carriers. The cheese market has taken place on the Waagplein in Alkmaar since 1593.

It was very crowded and cold today. We watched a bit of the market happenings, but it was difficult for all 10 of us to see together. We strolled through the Oud Stad part of town and down a side street at lead us to a lunch place that we all enjoyed, called Eets Palais.

After lunch we walked through and around the rest of the city before heading back. There was a lot to see and we all talked about wanting to come back again to Alkmaar. Alkmaar is a quaint town, that is easy to stroll and doesn’t feel overly touristy. There are big churches, several museums, outdoor shopping streets with cute boutiques, canals, and plenty of places to sit outside with a drink and some food. Hopefully next time it will be warmer.

One of the beauties of spring time in Holland is the longer hours of light. We are still waiting for the warmth to come, but for now its still heavy coats. The good news is It’s 9:30 pm and its still light out. Juliana and I went for a brisk, cold and quick walk before dinner and enjoyed the colors of spring. Here are some of the beauties we saw.

Day 263: More Vitamin D Please!

20130414-220444.jpg

I am going to remember this saying when it gets cloudy and gray again this week.

But today, the sun came out to play almost all day and night. Life is so much better with sunshine. People are just happier all around.

When we woke up this morning, we waited for the rain to pass and then headed out for a bike ride with Patti Beth and her family.

20130414-220853.jpg This is an old fashioned tram that runs through Amstelveen on the weekends.

20130414-221036.jpg This is the Jonge Dikkert – a fancy restaurant in Amstelveen.

We wanted to see the cherry blossom trees in bloom, but because of all the rain and cold weather lately, the blooms are delayed. We did get to enjoy a few blossoms, but not the field of color we expected.

We rode our bikes through the forest and to the pancake house. So many people were outside, enjoying the nice weather today. If you live in Amsterdam or nearby, this is a great place to visit with your family. Boerderij Meerzicht they have a playground, outdoor seating, coffee, dessert, and really delicious Dutch pancakes served a hundred different ways!

And if the day couldn’t get any better, we met up with friends for a rooftop BBQ. Sitting in the sunshine, listening to music, and having having a couple drinks felt so good! Thanks Cami and Rich for inviting us over!

Happy One Year Blogging Anniversary!

Here I Am, 365 days later… still writing!

Today it has been one year since I began writing every day. I never knew I would enjoy it as much as I do and never, ever thought of myself as a writer.

My passion is connecting people, finding things we have in common, supporting one another, finding joy every day, loving my family and friends, and creating communities.

Thank you for reading and for sharing your comments, private messages, stories and connections along the way and creating bonds of friendship and community.

Thank you for sharing this journey with me.

I am blessed.

Namaste.

Day 238: AmsteRandom

It is so cold today and to think that tomorrow is the first day of spring is crazy. I’ve somewhat adjusted to the cold, but being outside in it for several hours was just nuts! My hands and feet hurt from being numb and frozen. I’m just saying…

I’m happily riding the warm bus back to pick up the kids from school.

The good part of wandering in the cold was being with friends, getting some exercise and seeing new random places in Amsterdam. I love this city almost as much as San Francisco.

Day 225: Water + Yoga + SUP + Friends = Joy

20130307-175340.jpg

I look like a frog, but I’m a happy frog. This is what savasna looks like when you’re trying not to touch the freezing cold water.

Can you imagine doing yoga on the water? It’s the coolest feeling.

Imagine your gaze looking softly in front of you and a beautiful white swan is dancing on the water. Imagine looking up at the sky instead of a ceiling.
Imagine breathing in fresh air while focusing on one thing, your breathe.
And when you’re focused on your breathe, you’re not really worried about falling in.
And while you’re stretching and practicing, you get to enjoy the sounds of the water lapping at your board.

Mixing water play with yoga practice is awesome. I hope if this sounds interesting to you, that you will try it one day. You won’t be able to stop smiling.

20130307-215710.jpg

After we were done doing yoga, we took that relaxed feeling out for a paddle together. I was in the moment, loving life, thankful to Morene for loving SUP and sharing her passion across Amsterdam. I was thankful to Deborah for teaching SUP yoga, and to Jeff for supporting my passion and letting me buy a new Boga board for Holland touring. I can’t wait to put my own in the water!

Day 213: Baby It’s Cold Outside

It’s vacation time and it’s freezing cold outside! My kids would happily choose to look at an electronic screen all day, if I let them. But the mean mommy thinks kids should be doing other things besides focusing their eye balls all day on flashing lights and images. Back in California, I’d just say go outside and play and get some fresh air. But here it’s really cold, and even I don’t want to be out there, nor do I really want them playing by the partially frozen canal. Yes, I know they can put on layers and gloves and scarves, and hats and that there’s no bad weather, just bad dressers… But I guess we’re just lazy dressers and really not used to this level of cold.

Yesterday I told them that they were going to “have” to read before getting on their computers and video games. You would have thought I asked them to do 8 hours of chores. Our family has a motto, work then play. But all they wanted to do was play! Eventually they came around, but man, it was a challenging parent day!

Today, we actually enjoyed family reading time together, and the pain was gone! They got to have their screens back because they did the work first. I was content. But then I said it was time to do something else after an hour+ of e-play time, and they should do something together like play a board game. They said I was old fashioned, and that maybe I played games as a kid but they didn’t think that was a fun idea at all! Really? Am I that (old) fashioned? Probably so. I didn’t insist that they play a game, but I did insist they choose something other than electronic devices.

Th good news is they did find some great ideas. They went outside and juggled a soccer ball for awhile together. As it was really cold out, this didn’t last long. So they came in and asked if they could make guacamole. I said yes, as long as they cleaned up after themselves. it was cool to listen to them work together and to observe the process, without interfering which was challenging for me!

20130223-234828.jpg

20130223-234846.jpg

After they were done, and some friends came over, guess what they wanted to do again? Yep – you guessed it! Back to the computers to play Minecraft together. At least they were practicing sharing and had done research learning how to build different structures. I don’t get it, but maybe I’m just old fashioned! Where’s my Atari?

20130223-235458.jpg

And the girls? They were upstairs being creative with technology too – downloading the Harlem Shake song, making up their own dance and recording themselves with an iPod Touch! I guess i do love it, but I sure do miss my tape recorder and stereo!

What do you think about kids and technology? Is it a good thing? Do you set limits? I’m still learning by doing and don’t quite have it figured out yet. If it was warm outside, I’d say go outside and play!

Day 200: Happy Chinese New Year

20130210-215036.jpg

Happy Chinese New Year! Over 1.3 billion people in China and millions of people around the world, including us, celebrated the first day of the Chinese New Year today. Gong Xi Fa Cai is a traditional Chinese New Year greeting that means “wishing you prosperity” in Mandarin. This is the year of the snake, and is meant for steady progress and attention to detail. Might be a challenge for me!

April and Steve arrived today with their girls and we wandered thru Amsterdam’s small Chinatown and then towards the Bijenkorf to catch the tale end of the dragon dance.

I can’t believe we’ve been living in Holland for 200 days already! I’m very happy to have our family friends with us for two weeks. They came with all kinds of goodies from home and with gifts and greetings from our friends and neighbors. Thank you Brenda for all the Valentine’s day candies. Thank you Val for the beautifully, handmade scarves and warm socks for the kids, and shirt for Christian. You all are so thoughtful! And thanks A&S for coming all this way to enjoy Europe with us! We’re so glad you’re here and are going to enjoy every (freezing cold) minute with you!

Happy Chinese New Year, friends!!

Day 185: Here I Am On Ice

Today was a crazy, fun day. I love when things just come together. All 3 kids had plans today but I think I was the luckiest one. CJ was having a friend over to spend the night. His friend’s mom dropped him off and she stayed for a cup of tea and a long leisurely lunch. Juliana was supposed to go to a birthday party but wasn’t feeling well and decided to stay home. Poor girl! Charlie was invited to go ice skating, but I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make it happen. Besides the logistics, it was also snowing quite heavily and I was afraid of going out on the ice, even though I know my friends say it is safe!

We decided to be brave and give it a try and drove over to Barbara’s house. I passed a salt truck on the highway for the first time and my car was pitted with salt. That was interesting. Seeing the snow covered fields was beautiful.

We got to Barbara’s safely and I helped Charlie put on his new ice skates. It has been 2 years since he first skated. I brought Christian’s new skates (that were actually big on me!!) and decided to skate too. Once I saw that the lake was frozen and black (which means good) and Charlie felt safe, I felt free to explore and skated off with Barbara. I LOVED IT! I couldn’t stop smiling and didn’t want to stop, even though the wind was blowing and it was freezing outside! I was having so much fun, and I had never done anything like it before. I loved seeing Charlie have fun too, throwing snowballs, skating and sledding with his friend and being helped by the Dutch locals. We were outside on the frozen lake and I felt like a kid!! It was wonderful, and I felt so lucky that Barbara wanted to share this truly Dutch experience with me! Thanks, Barbara.

Here is a little video of me living in the moment, happy as can possibly be. I wish you all this much joy!! Thank you Barbara for a magical afternoon!

The ice skating and ice hockey continued on the canal out front tonight with friends because tomorrow it’s supposed to warm up again and the chance might be gone, until who knows when. Life is good!

Day 178: Joie de Raclette

I don’t know French, but what I wanted to share was how much fun it it was to share a Raclette dinner with friends. I first heard of this from Leanne Place and thought it sounded like fun, but was afraid of adding another appliance to our house.

A Raclette is a French word that means to scrape, as in to scrape melted cheese from a block of unmelted cheese onto your plate and to enjoy this with bread, vegetables and various charcuterie meats. We just melted the cheeses in little serving trays. I love picking and diping different kinds of foods, and I love to share them with others. It’s fun to play with your food, don’t you think?

Tonight we shared a Raclette dinner with some of our friends from school. We had a wonderful time and we didn’t want to leave, but after a long day of basketball, the kids were exhausted and were begging to go home and to bed! Pretty soon they’ll be begging to stay home and not go with us at all, so I’ll take tired for now! Happy end of the weekend.

Day 119: Thanksgiving Week

It feels really different to be in Holland for Thanksgiving. I don’t think I’ve ever been out of the USA for this holiday and the feel and vibe is soooo different, of course. People aren’t frantically shopping and searching for the best deal on Turkeys. Instead, we’re calling the local butcher shops to see if they can even get us a turkey for 100 euros!! The stores aren’t any more crowded than usual, and the conversation at school isn’t about being excited for a shortened week or leaving the office early or planning a short vacation.  The vibe is different and I miss it – not the stress, but the feeling of the swirl and chaos that surround Thanksgiving. We’re still celebrating it here – just a bit differently this year, and that’s ok. I’m just missing home a wee bit!

Today the American Community from our International School hosted a  lovely Thanksgiving coffee with traditional Thanksgiving food to taste and sample.

Image

There were turkey sandwiches, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pumpkin pie and cookies and muffins, pecan chocolate pie, and on and on. The tables were beautifully decorated and the feeling of Thanksgiving permeated the room. I loved it, and this got me a little excited for the rest of the week.

Today we opened the Thanksgiving Care Package that arrived in the mail from April and Steve and J and S.

Image

You have no idea how thankful I am to receive such a thoughtful and meaningful gift. The box was filled with Thanksgiving day decorations, plates, candy, the kids favorite snacks, pumpkin filling and spices, gravy packages and even stuffing! How thoughtful, right? It’s hard to find such “gold” here! Last year April and I planned and cooked our Thanksgiving dinner together and it was really nice. I’m missing that this year!! ;-(

Tomorrow is a normal day in Holland with a full day of school and continued basketball tryouts afterwards. I bought two turkey breasts and plan to make a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for our family anyway. Anyone want to join us?  It won’t be served at 4, but probably more like 7 or 8 pm!!

On Saturday, we’ll have a more traditional Thanksgiving gathering with some of our American friends. I’m excited for the potluck we’re pulling together and to not have to do it alone. I think Thanksgiving has to be shared – the whole feeling of family and friends gathering to share a special feast and to give thanks for fellowship and our blessings.

Our family holidays are not traditional and our actual tradition is to not have a tradition. This simplifies things – as there are no expectations and anything goes. This year we’ll celebrate on Saturday instead of Thursday… never have done this before, so I’m continuing on with our tradition.

Happy Thanksgiving – eat up and be merry!!
