Day 198: Amsterdam Half Marathon 2013

I love having a goal and something to look forward to. So when Barbara asked me if I wanted to run a half marathon with her in October, I immediately said yes, not worrying that the last race I ran was 20 years ago and only a 5K.

I started running with Jeff a few months ago, but just for exercise and to do something together. I never dreamed of a half marathon. So many of my friends are runners and I never saw myself as one. I didn’t think I could do it. But last year, Michele inspired me to run more than my typical 3 miles on the treadmill, and I surprised myself when I was able to run 5 miles, and the next day 7. The secret she taught me was to run and then walk if I had to and then to run again. For some reason, I never thought of that as an option. I always thought when I slowed to walk, that I must be done because I was tired. Not true. It’s possible to slow down and then go again. Thanks Michele – this tip should come in handy on the 13 miler!

Bob told me of a cool app called Runtastic. He’s running the full marathon and he uses it on his runs. I tried it out today for the first time and was able to run 4 miles at a 10 minute per mile pace with my music and GPS tracking my distance. It called out the mile markers, which kept me motivated. Thanks, Bob!

I ran out to the Oudekerk, my favorite town in Holland and even slowed to snap a few pictures while running to show you why this is one of the prettiest towns. The sun is out today and it is cold and crisp and gorgeous outside. Hope you have a great weekend.

Day 194: Friends

20130204-232052.jpg

I think when you move to a new place, the most important thing to find is one or two or three good friends as quickly as possible. I’ve learned this from experience over the years, not really knowing that this is what made me truly enjoy each new journey, but now that I reflect on it, this is my new little knowledge nugget.

I’ve also learned that friends serve a purpose and even though we move from place to place, the best of friends easily pick up where they left off the next time they come together. Some friendships naturally serve a limited purpose and the relationships turn into memories without the continuous connection, once the shared time together is gone. That’s natural and ok too.

It took me awhile, but I also learned that it’s possible to have more than one best friend. Even though literally, best is the superlative implying that there is only one, I think I can have more than one, and I’m sticking to it.

If I look back on my life as chapters, I have some friends that have been with me from the beginning, some that have left for good, a few that are Facebook and email connection friends, some that I see once in awhile, and some who I cry with joy when I see them again. And of course there is always the current chapter, filled with friends that help me enjoy my current, day to day life, both here and back home.

There is one friend, Megan, who I guess you could call an expat, although I didn’t call her that. She was just my new friend. She and her husband and four children moved to my neighborhood for a one year sabbatical at Stanford, from Michigan. Her kids went to the same school as mine and I almost ran her over one day. Not literally, but at least I noticed her and introduced myself to her the next time I saw her at school. We laughed and shared stories and connections, and before you knew it, our family and hers and April’s were best friends. We created a strong bond through shared experiences and margaritas, admiration and friendship in that one year, and then she moved back home to Michigan. I never thought I didn’t want to be friends with her, even though I knew she would be moving back. We just enjoyed all the days we could. In a way, I think she prepared me to become an expat too, because she lived life to the fullest while she was on her journey away from her normal routine, and she inspired me.

Before I moved overseas, Megan gave me a pep talk about our upcoming move, and told me how it would bring my family closer together and to make the most of it. She also wished for me that I would meet someone like me in my new town, that would welcome me and make me feel a part of my new community, sharing all that was good about being in my new place, like I did for her. I secretly prayed for the same thing, knowing that sometimes it comes down to luck, and timing and chemistry.

Well her wish and my prayers have come true. I am lucky and blessed. I have made many new friends here in Holland that fill my life with joy. We meet for drinks and meals, study Dutch, visit new places, exercise, shop, share stories and raise our kids together. Who knew that you could make friends where ever you go and that your capacity for friends is never full? I love my friends, both old and new and am so thankful for all of you.

Day 187: Yoga and Tea

Who knew that yoga and tea went together?

I’ve had 3 cups of tea today and each one made me smile.

The first cup was served after my yoga practice. We all sat on the ground and enjoyed a warm cup of tea together. I loved this and think its a great way to rehydrate and start your day.

20130128-232317.jpg

The next cup I had while working on the computer before picking up the kids from school. I received a box of tea for Christmas from Karina and just realized it’s called Yogi Tea! How appropriate. Each tea bag has a saying attached to the string, and I feel like I’m opening a fortune cookie. I love the little messages!

20130128-233458.jpg

I just sat down to relax after dinner, cleanup, homework help, and finishing the baskets and baskets full of laundry, and tucked the kids into bed. Aaahhhh…cuddled up on the couch with my flurry blanket from California, with time for one last cup of relaxation before bed. Here’s the last little tidbit of Yogi Tea knowledge to share with you…

I hope you had a good day and found some time to exercise and relax and enjoy a quiet moment!

Namaste.

Day 183: Some Things I Love About Holland

There are several things I Iike about Holland. Today I was happy by finding beautiful and inexpensive flowers and precut veggies ready for cooking. Not only do I like that they are ready to go, but also that I don’t have to think of which veggies to include in the mix.

20130124-223918.jpg
After grocery shopping, I was able to put together a Thai yellow chicken curry with mixed vegetables in 20 minutes!

20130124-224429.jpg
I also picked up a winter season special to make homemade pea soup, which is very popular here. All the ingredients you need are nicely packaged into one container. I never liked pea soup until I recently tried it again at Ineke’s house and loved it!

20130124-225315.jpg
When you need something sweet and salty, these are two of my favorite Dutch treats: Stroopwafels and Drop!

20130124-225857.jpg
Looks like I love food and flowers! I also like seeing people biking everywhere, but I didn’t take any pictures of them today. What do you love about Holland?

Day 179: Walking on the Frozen Canal!

It’s so cold outside! I put on extra layers and dressed warmly to go play with the kids. I think I lasted only 10 minutes before seeking warmth and a hot cup of tea. It sure was exciting to walk on the canal though, as it’s something we have never done before. I heard a couple small cracking sounds that scared me a bit, but I think that’s normal. They weren’t deep cracking sounds, just light little ones, which might have been the snow pack on top of the ice, but who knows! It’s supposed to snow the next few days, so it’ll probably be much safer to walk and skate then. I’d like for us to try skating on the canal, so we will have to go buy or borrow some skates!! Maybe we’ll have another snow day tomorrow! Happy Sunday!

Here are some pictures of our newest adventure.

Day 178: Joie de Raclette

I don’t know French, but what I wanted to share was how much fun it it was to share a Raclette dinner with friends. I first heard of this from Leanne Place and thought it sounded like fun, but was afraid of adding another appliance to our house.

A Raclette is a French word that means to scrape, as in to scrape melted cheese from a block of unmelted cheese onto your plate and to enjoy this with bread, vegetables and various charcuterie meats. We just melted the cheeses in little serving trays. I love picking and diping different kinds of foods, and I love to share them with others. It’s fun to play with your food, don’t you think?

Tonight we shared a Raclette dinner with some of our friends from school. We had a wonderful time and we didn’t want to leave, but after a long day of basketball, the kids were exhausted and were begging to go home and to bed! Pretty soon they’ll be begging to stay home and not go with us at all, so I’ll take tired for now! Happy end of the weekend.

Day 176: Still Life. Still Freezing.

20130117-215333.jpg

The tennis courts are frozen. Thank goodness for indoor courts. I had a great lesson today. Actually, I had three great lessons today. My tennis coach is still trying to teach me to loosen up and move forward to the ball. I keep trying to over power my swing and I lean back. But when I move forward and just let go, everything is alright. I think there’s a metaphor in there. When I thought too hard about it, I’d tighten my grip and the ball would not consistently land in the court. But when I went with the flow and loosened up a bit, my consistency was amazing. I think I can learn something from that. Now if I can only repeat what I’ve practiced and learned!! I swear this helps me to be a more patient mom, knowing how challenging it is to actually apply what you learn.

My second and third lessons came from reading passionate and authentic blogs from two women whom I regularly follow. I love these women and don’t even know them. One woman is living life in the moment, a moment that brings tremendous struggle, yet she is real and authentic and represents the meaning of love and life. She gets it and I learn so much from her. Her name is Suzanne Rico. She is from California and you you can find her blog here: Walking Papers. Today I cried while reading about her dress rehearsal for dying and only hope I have as much grace as she does when this event comes my way. She has a beautiful soul.

The other woman is Kirsty Rice from Australia. She is an expat with 4 kids living in Doha. She also has an authentic voice and shares what it is like to live abroad and to raise children away from home. I started following and learning from her before we decided to become expats and I look forward to her regular updates. You can find her here: 4 kids, 20 suitcases & a beagle Today she asked where her “lurkers” were from and reading all the comments and seeing connections was pretty cool. She has touched so many lives with her gift of writing and sharing. I like that and she inspires me.

And I’ll leave you with one last picture. This man was standing in the freezing weather waiting for a bus. There is a windmill in the distance and the typically green field is covered in snow. I took this from my warm minivan, thankful as ever that she’s with me and that we weren’t standing outside tonight.

Day 170: Friday Market Success and Homemade Sushi

20130111-234600.jpg

Found a good deal on fabric for our California Surfing Photo Op at the Friday Market in Amstelveen! Very happy.

Facebook’s Update Status Bar now asks:

“How are you feeling, Adriana?”

Is that like, “Hi, how are you? I’m fine. How are you?”  How are you supposed to answer that?  Maybe they should ask “What are you doing, Adriana?”  or “What do you feel like sharing with the world today? Is it something about your kids, your food, your mood, or some place you’ve been lately? Maybe you have a nice quote to share or a political opinion to spread, although I never share those!!  Facebook is sort of like Reality TV – we can get a glimpse of typically the positive side of our friends’ and family’s life story. I still find the news entertaining and enjoy reading the highlights, so thanks for sharing how you’re feeling. You inspire me and I feel happy for you.

Today I was feeling content. I had nothing I had to do and it’s Friday, so that feels good. I had 3 hours free after running errands without a schedule and I loved it.  Of course I had things to do, but nothing that was urgent. I started with a cup of coffee to warm up from the chill outside. I had to scrape the ice off the windows this morning before taking the kids to school.  I then sat down and began reading Facebook updates and email, and then working on the photo booth project and making lunch. I had bought an avocado and a cucumber, as well as other healthy veggies and decided to make a delicious lunch, homemade vegetarian sushi rolls. I wish someone was here to share them with me, but I hadn’t planned on making lunch – it just appeared after seeing someone share a similar recipe on their Facebook page.

The final art piece – isn’t it pretty? It was delicious and easy too!

Hope you have a good weekend!  – Adriana

Day 167: I AM Still Learning…

I think it’s always important to learn something new, try something new, go somewhere new… keep adapting and changing, otherwise life gets boring and I don’t believe in that word.

Today I started my new Dutch class. I will be taking 24 lessons, 3 hours each for the next several months and practicing and speaking a little bit more each day. I’m counting on my Dutch friends and family to speak to me in Dutch and not laugh at me when I try to speak back to them in Dutch. I understand some but can’t really speak it or write it.  Wish me luck!!

Image

Today I decided to be Dutch too, and rode my bike to class. Luckily there wasn’t any rain – just gray skies and cold weather which actually isn’t “so” bad anymore compared to adding rain in the mix. I guess I’ve changed my expectations and am adapting, although I still don’t like this weather and find the dreary skies quite heavy. I long for sunshine but accept what is and will make the best of it, like riding my bike!

To reward myself for riding and not having to pay for parking (which also irks me) I spent the money instead on sushi for lunch and took it home, yet next time I’ll have to buy a little more as I’m still hungry!

Image

It was nice to have a quiet afternoon before kid pickup, just me and my sushi and time to write about my day.  I hope you have a wonderful day, learning something new and doing something nice for yourself and hopefully you’ll share your joy.

Day 111: Wanderlust

Today was a another sunny day in Madrid, which made me smile. I didn’t have much of a plan but more of a sense of direction to begin the day. And then I wandered and just enjoyed the journey.

I started the day with Jeff at Valor, trying the infamous chocolate y churros, which didn’t disappoint.
20121114-003717.jpg

Next we wandered over to the cloistered monastery and took a tour in Spanish. It was amazing! To think that some people choose to live a lifestyle where they never connect with the outside world. It was incredibly ornate and religious!
20121114-004129.jpg

Afterward, Jeff went to his conference and I wandered to Chueca. I found the Mercado San Anton and enjoyed an empanada from the marketplace, along with a glass of cava, which was very tasty.
20121114-004308.jpg

Next I wandered through the gardens of Retiro, and ended up at the Prado museum. I wasn’t planning on going there, but ended up having enough time and spent the next couple of hours admiring the art, amazed by the talents of some people!
20121114-004407.jpg

I wandered back to the hotel in time to meet Jeff and to do a tapas crawl for dinner before 10 pm.

Life is good!!
