Day 284: Keukenhof – The World’s Largest Flower Garden

20130505-213139.jpg

Keukenhof, also known as the Garden of Europe, is the world’s largest flower garden. It is situated near Lisse, Netherlands. Over 7,000,000 bulbs are planted each year.

Today was a warm and sunny day and perfect for wandering the fields with Rob and Wendy and their two dogs. We all had a great time taking pictures, enjoying the floral scents that filled the air, listening to live music and enjoying our time together. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures from this beautiful place.

Day 283: Touring Amsterdam

I’ve gotten a little bit better about planning ahead now that we have limited time left in Holland. Last month I tried to coordinate with our family here in Holland and today day they came to visit us and we explored Amsterdam together. Jeff is a really good tour guide. He knows his way around the city and which trams to take to get us where we need to go. I love this about him! I don’t have a sense of direction at all and my visuo-spatial skills are horrible. Anyway, the weather was perfect and wandering around outside felt great. Pictures are better than words…

Best buddies!

Thank you Gerard, Anita, Kelsi, Raomi, and Rob for spending the day with us. It was perfect.

The highlight for me today was the two minutes of silence at 8pm in remembrance of all the Dutch citizens and members of the armed forces who lost their lives in World War Two and in remembrance of all Dutch citizens who have lost their lives since that time in other wars and peacekeeping missions. The entire nation comes to a complete and silent halt for those two minutes. We were on the bus heading home from Amsterdam and the bus driver pulled over and parked for two minutes of silence. It was quite moving.

Day 282: Running and Supping

Who knew that today would be so beautiful? I got to run and SUP … what could be better?

I hadn’t planned on going for a run today, but the sun was shining and no wind was blowing and it was too gorgeous to be indoors. I ran 3.4 miles in 33 minutes with several stops to smell the roses, so to speak. I wanted to share the beauty around me on my run through the forests, and plus the breaks gave me a chance to catch my breath. Running isn’t easy for me… But I keep doing it. I hope you enjoy the views…

So that’s why my run was a bit slower… I had to enjoy my surroundings. Gorgeous, right?

After my run, I showered and got dressed and rode my bike to the Friday market to buy a birthday present, and some things for dinner. I came home and assembled my favorites right now: celery root mashed with creme fraiche and salt and pepper… so delicious, thanks Patti Beth for introducing me to a food I would have never noticed. I also made a roasted beet salad with goat cheese, toasted pine nuts and balsamic vinegar. yum! These were side dishes for the grilling team! We went over to Barbara’s house for dinner and to paddle together. We couldn’t have asked for any better conditions. The sun was warm, the wind was non existent, and the water was smooth as glass. We supped before and after dinner at sunset. I was so happy. I love being on the water. Thanks to Barbara and D for hosting all of us. We loved your company and dinner was great!

Day 281: Archeon – History Field Trip Today

20130502-232546.jpg

Charlie was so excited that I was chaperoning his field trip today. I’m so thankful that he still wants me to be with him and that I am able to volunteer. We took an hour long bus ride to Archeon, a hands-on history museum that let us explore prehistoric times, the Roman period and the Middle Ages.

There were movies, hands on exhibits, Roman leaders guiding us, playgrounds, villages, themed street performers, dress up, and all sorts of games to play.

20130502-232949.jpg

We all had a fabulous time, even though the weather was still pretty chilly still in May. I was most impressed with how the Roman soldier was able to quickly teach the kids commands and was able to get their attention and have them follow his orders. I took a few discipline parenting tips home with me!

20130502-232820.jpg

Charlie’s favorite activity was the spear throwing. I even got a chance to try it too, and quickly learned I need some practice. It looks easier than it was.

20130502-233043.jpg

20130502-233242.jpg

One part of the exhibit taught the kids about the Roman baths. They got to learn about how the rich Romans were the ones getting massages and all the kids took turns giving each other hand massages. Charlie wasn’t too keen on this idea and passed when it came time for his friend to return the favor. He doesn’t like to be oily, or dirty. I would have loved it.

20130502-233545.jpg

One thing that struck me was all the safety hazards that would never be allowed in California. They had candles and fires burning unattended. The playground was one of those really big, fun, wooden structures, with speedy metal slides. All of these are slowly being removed from California parks and replaced with plastic ones, which aren’t nearly as fun or dangerous. I miss the old ones, and I love that the kids got to play without all the worries.

Another thing I got a kick out of was watching the kids play tug of war. They all seemed really into it and I just loved the good, old-fashioned, worry free, fun.

Day 280: Simplicity

20130501-212422.jpg

I like simple things. Really, I do. I am very happy being home with family and friends and even being alone in my clean house. I love to cook and to entertain, and I love to be outside in the sunshine and today I was quite content.

Today I decided to ride my bike to run errands, finally. It’s never been my first choice to hop on my bike to get me from A to B. if I can drive there, I typically prefer that method of transportation. But today it was sunny and cool and was my time to feel like a Dutch girl! I hopped on my bike to an appointment, and then decided to ride to a new grocery store. Now I know my local friends here are all biking everywhere, but this is new to me. When I went to the grocery store, I limited my shopping by removing my black mesh basket from the front of my orange bike and carrying one plastic bag, that I could place in my saddle bags after I was done. It was a novelty to me to limit my choices, only buy what could fit in the bag and basket and be done. I carried my loot over to my bike, and repackaged everything to fit, before heading home.

I was proud of myself for trying something new and simple. I did however think about how I couldn’t stop anywhere else, because I had groceries in the “car.” And there was no way to lock up the loot! A new way of thinking. I did enjoy this method of shopping and transportation and will definitely go again as the weather stays nice. Simplicity. Gotta love it.
