Day 64: Our Honda in Holland

20120927-220032.jpg

Ssshhh! Don’t laugh…but our really fancy, clean, and shiny minivan is finally in our possession again! I never thought I’d be so excited to see it, but after having all three kids sitting in the cramped back seat of the rental car for the past 2 months, it really made me want to sing! I love that they can spread out and that there are sliding doors and room for all our stuff and extra seats for Oma and Opa when they arrive. It’s the little things that make me happy!

I’m sure I’ll be quite the sight with my sexy racks on top and Santa Cruz stickers… Ya, right! Just remember not to laugh!

It took 3 months from the time we shipped it until it’s journey through customs and adaptations until we could have it back today, and I am thrilled, even if it is a minivan!!

Day 63: A Message from Charlie

Good afternoon. This is Charlie speaking. I hope you are having fun wherever you are, but I think I’m having more fun because I’m on a big, gigantic vacation.

And my house, I think is more fun to play in. I feel really good in Holland. But, the school day is longer here but we have a 45 minute recess. The soccer field is like a real one and it’s made of fake grass and has two goals built in.  I met a new friend that is from Los Altos! I hope you’re having a fun time and I think you’ll like it here. You should come and see me or do what I’m doing right now! You should come to Holland. It’s a nice place. The weather is nice and cold. But it’s fun and warm for me. I only feel the breeze when it’s sunny and sometimes cold. But I’m still wearing my shorts and my soccer suits and shoes.

I like that there are lots of parks with very big playgrounds. Right near my house, there is a place called Adventure Island. Right near Adventure Island, there is a place that kids can drive boats. And there is a ropes course that’s called Fun Forest.

At my school, they have a forest, way in the back. It has a zipline. Our lunch room is brand new. My teacher is super nice! I wish all of my friends in America were here too! That’s what I miss the most!! My friends!

I hope the day was good for you. That is the end of your day when you read this good afternoon message. Good afternoon!! This is Charlie speaking. Oh, sorry. I was thinking something else. Well, back to what I was saying…I hope you enjoyed the good afternoon message. Done.

Day 62: A Message from Christian

Hello, this is Christian

I wanted to tell everybody about how my experience has gone here. It has been 2 months today, and we have all our stuff, school and soon, our car! School has been the big thing for me. One month so far into it I am doing great. The school teaches you how to think deeply into everything, even PE. Homework is so much cooler and easier because all the home work is due either 2 days after it is given or one week later. My schedule is different than a California schedule.  In California, you have the same classes each day, but here you have five classes on a block schedule each day and then you switch and have five different classes the next day and then it rotates again. I take 2 electives: painting, design technology (not architectural) and 2 languages: Mandarin and Dutch. I am training for the basketball team with my friends. Speaking of friends, I have 7 new, great friends who are basically like an extra large package who consist of 5 Dutch boys, one French and one British. The Dutch friends have taught me some Dutch, and the French and British buds teach me great soccer. Today I shared a little bit of American culture, an American football!! My friends, Luca, Matt, Max, Xander, Henk, Wybe and I all played but eventually the other team made up of 3 inexperienced Dutch kids beat my team, 14 to 7. They were all happy and wanted to play again. I am probably most happy here now because I have friends, family, and a place where I belong. I love this country, the people places and how easy it is to travel around. 1 thing I do dislike is the rain, but overall I’m good. Hope whoever is reading from Sunnyvale, or from my family will comment, or subscribe to this blog and keep in touch!

Best wishes, Christian

Day 61: Getting Ready for Visitors

Testing out the new “guest bed”

I bought a folding cot today. We have a guest room with a double bed, BUT I felt that we needed one more bed – just in case. The couch in the guest room is from IKEA and turns into a double bed, which feels pretty comfy when you’re laying on it for 10 minutes. I just don’t know how comfortable it will be for two people for two months when my parents arrive. So I thought having the cot with an extra mattress and a thermarest pad to put on top, should give my mom and dad a little more space in case the togetherness is too much, if you know what I mean.

It will also come in good use when we plan to host two girls from the Luxembourg International School volleyball team next month. We’d like for them to each have their own bed, and not to have to sleep on the floor. It’s the little things that make me happy!

And when April and Steve and their girls come for a visit, we’ll have enough bed space for everyone!

So if you want to come for a visit, we should now have enough beds! And if you have guests coming to Holland to visit and need an extra cot, we’ll have one to share.

Day 60: Family Day

Guess what? He likes me… he invited me to go running with him again!!  Whoohoo…  what a great way to start the day.  Charlie even came with us on his bike while we ran along the canals. The sun was shining too, and it’s the first official day of fall. We definitely noticed the change in weather though… even though it was sunny, it was very cold out. And by the end of the day, it was raining and 9 degrees celsius out. Time for scarves and boots and to put away the flip flops.

We spent the rest of our Sunday with family. Gerard and Anita came over first and dropped off an outside table they weren’t using anymore. Thanks, guys!  We had a quick cup of coffee together, and then drove over to Rob and Wendy’s house for the afternoon, that soon lead into dinner together. I love days like today.

We enjoyed time together, with coffee and cake, and then we took the dogs and kids out for a walk.

happy dogs!

It was fun to watch the dogs chasing each other and playing catch with the same stick. And we also loved watching the kids run around with a football and playing on the good ol’ fashioned merry go rounds that make you so dizzy! When we came back, Rob lit a fire and we had dinner together. Afterwards, we watched his movie/photo show from their trip to Morocco.  I loved seeing all the colors and sand dunes and art! Make me want to go there too.

Day 49: Let’s Go

20120912-211907.jpg

Mmm… A smoker with bacon in it!

Let’s Go – Amsterdam.

I love that I have kids and that through them being in school, I get to make new friend’s too. I hear if you have kids or a dog, it’s easy to make friends. I’ll stick with kids, especially since mine are potty trained!

There is a series of Let’s Go – Outings run by parent volunteers where a group of 20 or so will gather and explore different areas together.

Today after drop off, we ventured into Amsterdam and used different trams to get to different parts of the city. It’s always nice to go with someone who already knows the system and can tell you where to stop and transfer from tram to tram. It makes it so much easier.

Our tour guide also pointed out the best butcher, where to find spices, kitchen shops and fancy bakeries to name a few hot spots.

While journeying with new women, I got to meet new friends from Mexico, Barcelona and Argentina who have invited me to come and practice my Spanish with them. This trip was a way to socialize with women from different cultures, because when you arrive in an international school, women tend to gather by nationality. I think this provides comfort initially when everything is so new and different. I love my country and sharing stories with my American friends, and I also enjoy learning about the lives of women from other countries. I loved speaking Spanish today again and want to learn more Dutch too. I loved being out and exploring and feeling more comfortable navigating around my new home town.

Life is good!

Day 28: The Good and The Bad

Which do you want first?  The good or the bad?

Ok, I’ll give you the good first – We had our third day of orientation today, but today was for the lower school kids. C was so happy seeing his new classroom, meeting his sweet, new teacher and making new friends immediately. I love how kids can just do that. They just run after each other, and say, come on let’s go and the fun begins. By the time we finished our BBQ lunch, I couldn’t get him off the playground without demands for a play date right away and whose house it was gonna be at.  The coolest part was that his new friend is originally from Los Altos, which is the next town over from our home town. Charlie said he was so happy that he could keep his friend forever and that when we’re done in Holland he can still see his friend back home. How sweet is that?  I’m so happy for him, and for me too! Loved his new best friend’s mom, and if she didn’t have company and I didn’t have to run errands again we’d be at each other’s houses already. Ok, maybe tomorrow.

Image

And CJ stayed home while we were at orientation, hanging out with his new friend that lives a couple doors down. He was happy to have someone to watch movies with and play games, and just be a teenager with.

One last part of good news, before the bad… JJ and I went shopping on our bikes to the market place while Jeff waited for another IKEA delivery that we’ve been waiting for, for weeks. I’ll get to that in a minute. Can you see where this leading?  Anyway, it was fun to go on a date with my soon to be middle school daughter, just her and I – trying on new clothes and looking for a new backpack, and shopping for dinner together. We gathered everything in our reusable bags and rode home. It was really fun, and we saw geese and ducks on the canals along the ride home. The air was cooler and it was so pleasant.  When we arrived back home, we were happy to see that the IKEA delivery items arrived and were on the floor of the kitchen.

The bad news is that the IKEA table we ordered on August 8th, was missing parts. We tried to fix the problem, but customer service in the Netherlands isn’t their strong quality. And when you call customer service, it’s a 900 number you have to dial and they charge .15 cents per minute. And they put you on hold. And they don’t give you a reference number. And they don’t solve the problem, but tell you something different than what is reality. So basically, you’re screwed. And we were. And we waited. And we called. And we got the run around. They said they couldn’t redeliver our table for another 3 weeks. And I cried FOUL!  And they said that was the best they could do. And I said BS.  And so yesterday, we drove back to IKEA and ordered a new table (while we wait for them to come pick up the defective table) and scheduled delivery for today (after orientation) – imagine that it could be delivered in less than 3 weeks. AMAZING what happens when you don’t accept no for an answer. But anyway, the table that arrived tonight – you won’t believe this… was missing the same exact parts. 12 of them to be exact!  OMG – can you imagine the frustration?  It’s really not fun not having a table “forever”. So we printed off the crazy letters explaining our case, and highlighted the missing parts on the assembly instructions and went back to IKEA again!  Now we swore we’d never go to IKEA again – yet there we were.  And the guy in customer service looked at us like this couldn’t be possible. And he hadn’t heard of this, and blah blah blah.  But basically, he sent us to another warehouse a half mile away, where we opened up the boxes of the same table and took the missing parts, hoping we could put our table together.

So all that was bad is now almost good. Jeff and I worked for a little over an hour, after putting the kids to bed and we now have a table. And one dead table sitting on the floor, that somehow has to get back to IKEA so that we can get our money back since we’ve paid for two tables. The guy wouldn’t give me credit without the delivery company picking up the old table and having me sign some receipt – that I then have to take back to IKEA again!!  He says that the pickup is scheduled in the system, but I don’t believe it. I think I’ll call a 900 number again tomorrow and pay another 15 cents a minute to help them run their operations. Wish me luck!  Oh, and he threw in two free lunches. Wow – wasn’t that nice? I bet they have a lot of working tables in the lunch room. Anyone want to join me??

Day 26: New School Orientation

Believe it or not, I didn’t take a single picture today. That’s a first!  I think I was too busy listening and being present at the kids’ (and parents’) orientation today.  The best part of the orientation was that our big kids disappeared with their groups and were seen around campus smiling and following after their new peers. After all the testing and information sharing, there was a BBQ lunch for everyone. Our kids ate with their new friends and Jeff and I enjoyed chatting with and getting to know some of the new families.

The second best part of this new school, is that it fosters community and wants parents to feel welcome and a part of the school – not only for the kids, but for the international community that we are. To feel like we have a place to be and to gather and to build friendships and community. I love this. It’s what I’m good at – I love people. I love hearing their stories and learning from one another.

It felt a little bit like home too – a very diverse, multicultural community with several different languages spoken, and several different ethnicities from all around the world, gathered together.

We’re all excited to begin this next phase of our lives.

We loved seeing so many pictures of the first day of school from so many of our friends on Facebook today. It did feel strange to not be there with you and to walk to school through the neighborhood together. Seeing the pictures of the first day is like a milestone – representing change and growth and newness. Loved it. And hope to see more as more friends continue new beginnings too, just like us.

xo

Day 25: Heat Wave

It was 90 degrees here today and I think we melted. We went to try out a local church this morning and literally almost passed out from the heat. We made it through the intriguing sermon, but were a bit light headed before we left.

Afterwards, we ventured over to Sally’s house to pick up an extra transformer they had for us to borrow for our old tv and PS3 for the kids. We didn’t plan on staying long, but all of us were enjoying their company and playing with their dogs and cats. We took a walk over to the Amsterdamse Bos to check out the jousting festival that was taking place in the forest. It was too hot to walk around in the sun, and we just hung out in the shade and shared stories before walking back to their house.

We had planned to take a drive up the coast this afternoon but were warned to watch out for the beach traffic.  We just wanted to go for a long drive in an air conditioned car and chose to see where my Uncle Adrian used to be stationed in Holland in Den Helder. By the time we got up to Den Helder and came to the roundabout to take us out to the sea, the traffic was lined up from two different spots on the circle with at least 100 cars each attempting to return from the beach. We decided to just continue to drive around the roundabout and continue back the way we came. There was no way I wanted to wait in that traffic circle for another hour.

Image

Instead, we found ourselves at a random snack shop, hoping to find a bathroom and something to snack on. We actually had a great time enjoying snacks and playing pool together before heading home.

It’s still hot outside and is very hard for the kids to go to sleep. We’re trying to get them to bed earlier than usual since school is ready to begin and we’re on no type of schedule whatsover. But we didn’t even have dinner until after 8 pm.  Oh well – we’ll figure it out this week regardless, right?

We hope that all our friends back in Sunnyvale enjoy their new teachers and middle school and have a great first day back to school tomorrow. We’re kinda missing being there to walk to school together and to see each other again, after a busy summer!  Wishing you all the best.  We start orientation at our new school tomorrow.  New beginnings…
