Day 243: Busy-ness

One of the things I think I love most about our experience living abroad and away from our normal home, is the change in our normal, hectic, over scheduled life. It’s not that we’re not busy and doing things here, it just feels different and the pace feels slower and more relaxed and I’m trying to understand why.

The thought to write this post came from reading Barbara’s comment about how she liked reading my blogs and how I keep BUSY, which made me think…

We are all busy.

She knows a few of the things I am busy doing and experiencing that I chose to publicly share. But I don’t know a lot about what she’s doing or what you’re doing unless you tell me a story, post it on FB, instagram or tweet about it, or I’m there sharing the busyness with you. I love knowing what you choose to be busy doing and enjoying because I’m curious like that. We all get the same 24 hours a day, but our choices how we spend them each day are unlimited and unique. Isn’t that a crazy thought?

What are we busy doing? And is what we chose to be busy with all that important? And if we’re too busy are we really enjoying our busy-ness? Things that make you go hmmm…

I think the first reason it feels differently busy here for me is because we broke out of our routine and expectations. It’s kinda like we’re on a sabbatical from our Other life.

Secondly, when you’re all new to an area, you depend on each other more than you would at home with all of our different support networks. We tend to do more as one big group vs individually.

Third, all our kids are at the same school. This means one drop off time and one pick up. They also have all their after school activities at the school. There are buses that take the kids to their sport matches and bring them back again. When one child is practicing, there is a nice place to foster community at the school while waiting together in a comfortable, warm building while having a cup of tea and a snack together. I am not driving all over town and waiting and waiting. I think this is the biggest factor that changed.

Fourth, we have made friends with families with kids close in age to our own. When the kids play, so do the parents. It’s easy and fun and creates harmony.

This sabbatical is a great thing!

Today we were busy doing yoga, watching PB make sushi, building a bonfire and roasting marshmallows in the freezing and windy weather,

having a play date, and cooking Indonesian food…

Along with the usual chores like going to work, housecleaning and kid logistics. We were busy living it up! How were you busy today and did you have fun? Thanks BP for the thought!! xo

P.S. Happy Sweet 16th birthday to Sweet Caroline!! I love you!

Day 164: What We Like Best So Far

We’re wrapping up winter vacation and have had a couple days close to home.
Today we were talking about what we like the most about living abroad.

We realized that there are several benefits and several costs, but we’re still ahead in terms of benefits.

I would have thought that what we liked most was having to do with travel and seeing Europe. But our responses were varied, and yes, that is a huge benefit but it wasn’t our top pick. What we like the most is the opportunity to be on this journey as a family and having more time together with less distractions. Jeff’s commute is shorter. The kids are all at one school with the same drop off and pick up times, so there is less time back and forth between locations. As for sports, they practice right at school, so there is no driving all over town at competing hours and there is no traffic between school and home. When one kid has practice and the others don’t, there is a comfortable building for the rest of us to stay in and chat with friends, buy a snack or coffee from the cafeteria, and/or go to the library to work on homework or read. Basically there is warmth and entertainment and ease. In the evenings, I am home more than I was back in California. I’m not out hosting Stella & Dot trunk shows, not attending PEO or PTA meetings, and our family is together for dinner most nights. The stores are all closed by 5 or 6, except for Thursday evenings, so there is never any errand to run at night. And even the grocery stores are closed by 7 or 8, so it forces you to be prepared. No late night Target runs!! All of this is HUGE, and I had no idea. I AM content.

Our living space feels larger here than in the US, probably because of the floor plan even though some rooms are smaller. Jeff has a dedicated office and each kid his own room. There are also three levels to the house which gives us room to spread out and not disrupt each other as easily. I think this makes a difference too, to our happiness quotient. Now if we only had a garage and bigger yard, it would be even better, but I guess we can’t have it all.

We are enjoying time together, and not just traveling, but the simple things like baking, cooking, eating, playing, riding bikes, exercising, and even doing chores together. We work together and play together and I’m really liking how this works, for now. I know it won’t last forever so I’m just soaking it all in and enjoying the moments the best I can (in between the tantrums, and bickering and loud noises that come with the territory!!). Again, it’s perfectly imperfect… And I like it. When does school start again?!?

Tonight the kids and I rode over to the mall on our bikes, in the dewy, wet, cold fog. We had to get a few things and Jeff needed the car to find a place to buy propane for our new hand-me-down grill!! Yay! We haven’t grilled in 5 months and boy have we missed it!! Thank you Kim and Jeff for sharing yours with us before you move off to Singapore!!

Our first night of grilling – now if I can learn what the cuts of meat are at the grocery store, we might even enjoy a Really good BBQ!

What do you like best so far? So far as what? That’s for you to ponder and decide…

Day 157: Family Bike Ride and Goat Farm

We were all busy cleaning up around our house today, catching up with laundry and decluttering. Isn’t that what you do on a weekend? But then the sun was shining in and we had to stop cleaning and go outside for a bike ride. Just like that.

We live by the Amsterdamsebos, which is an awesome man made forest with lakes and rowing ponds and pathways and fields and trees of course, along with other surprises. My favorite part is riding along this rowing pond or body of water – I don’t know what you call it. But there are always people out running, and riding, and rowing and fishing, and strolling. There are protected paths that make it safe to take your family out for a bike ride, like we did today. Jeff and I also run through this forest every other day when we can get out for a run, as it is so conveniently close.

While we were riding today, we took the kids to a goat farm we had heard about and ran by earlier in the week. We parked our bikes and took a break to check out the farm. Here are some of the animals we saw.

20121229-230630.jpg This trio was funny – the cow was snuggled up to the pig and the goat kept standing on the pig. The pig would grunt and eventually the cow nudged the goat off his back.

P.S. Being with the goats made me miss you Michele, and our trip to the Harley Goat Farm and your pygmies!!

Day 151: Turning Off the Computer

Today I told the kids to turn off the computers, and to read and play. This was a challenge, definitely, and took awhile to gain compliance. But look what happened instead, once I got them on board with my evil plan…

The boys got creative and decided to draw a city together on BIG paper.

They each read their books and Juliana worked on her humanities homework.

Jeff and I went for a run together and I wrapped presents.

The boys went outside for a nature walk and collected red, green, yellow and brown things. And after they dropped off their loot, they went back outside with a soccer ball and brought home a neighbor friend to play (video games!!). But hey, they were screen free all day until dinner time!!

We baked sugar cookies together and all had fun rolling out the dough and nibbling on the cookie dough. And Juliana spent more time decorating the cookies with her artistic touch.

Life is good…and Christmas is almost here. This is the most relaxing Christmas I’ve ever had… No stress, no shopping frenzy, no rushing, no pressure. I like this European way… Happy Christmas Eve, Eve. xo
