First Day of December

I love Christmas, especially with kids. I don’t know who was more excited, me or Charlie, that it was December 1st and it was Sunday, meaning we had time to begin decorating on a weekend day.

We had such a busy weekend, yet we still made time to prepare for Christmas and I’m so happy. I love the process of taking down all 17 boxes from the attic and opening them up to discover our treasures.

My favorite boxes contain our collection of ornaments and a piece of our family history. My favorite ornaments are the ones we’ve made or have pictures of the kids through the years with the dates on them.

Juliana turned on Christmas music and Charlie built the manger scene and set it up on the mantle.

We all hung a few ornaments on our chaotic tree.

Juliana says that when she grows up she will have a formal tree and nothing like ours. I like that she has her own mind and vision of how she will be and decorate her own tree one day.

I’m happy that advent has begun and that we are ready to celebrate the season of Christmas. I love this time of year and am happy to be home again to celebrate.

Merry Christmas! Enjoy the season!! xo

Day 153: Merry Christmas!

Image

We enjoyed a crazy, chaotic Christmas at home today and here are the remains! The kids were thrilled with their gifts from Santa and family and friends. We were all definitely spoiled and thank Mom and Dad, April and Steve, Nate and Becky, Michele and Jason, Brenda and Sonny, Julie and Ted, Patti and Brian, Patti Beth and Chris, Pat and Chuck, and Grandparent Hughes for all your gifts, and most especially for thinking of us.

We enjoyed being woken up early (yeah, right!) by our eager little one, and stayed in our jammies all day.  Jeff spent hours trying to help them set up their new electronic devices. Thank God, for him. It was nice to have a day without an agenda. We took a ride later in the afternoon to see some nearby towns such as Vinkeveen, Abcoude, and Uithoorn and to see the countryside before coming back home for an interesting dinner. We bought what we thought was a smoked pork roast, however it had somewhat of an odd flavoring of cloves and spices that none of us really liked. At least the roasted brussel sprouts with bacon and the pan fried potatoes were tasty!! Luckily no one came over for dinner tonight, otherwise we would have had to throw in a pizza at the last minute!!

Thank you Laurie for calling me and catching up. April and Steve and J & S, I loved seeing you in your jammies too and watching your excitement on Facetime while you opened up the little dutch treats we sent. Thank you Kimmy for letting me see my nieces too – I loved watching G dance to her new game, and K’s long hair, and T’s joyful spirit. Mom and Dad – thanks for calling too.

We wish you a Merry Christmas, filled with joy and hope, magic and love, anticipation and excitement.  xoxo

Day 152: Merry Christmas Eve!

Tonight is Christmas Eve and we chose to stay in the Netherlands this year and have a European Christmas.

We went to church with friends and enjoyed the uplifting Christmas music and message of hope and light.

Afterwards, we had friends over for an appetizer and finger food type dinner with drinks and desserts. I love having people over and tonight was great! I feel at home here and I love the new friends we’ve made.

After everyone left, we called B to Facetime with her family and open the package she had sent us. We opened the box to see this:

I cracked up laughing before we saw even more that was in the box, which was such a sweet and thoughtful surprise. Back home, we have a tradition of playing Santa’s Elf and leaving a sign on friends’ doors along with little treats and a message explaining the elf process, and paying it forward to two more friends. And you had to be sneaky and not reveal yourself. How sweet was it that they chose us all the way over here??

What was in the box was above and beyond too and something for each of us. But what made me smile the most was the sound of laughter coming from Charlie’s friend, D. He was so happy to see Charlie and Charlie to see him that they just giggled and shared inside jokes. I smiled and cried too…. Missing home just a little bit again and thankful for good friends.

So with that, I wish you the touch of magic that Christmas offers and the gift of love and friendship that fills our souls. Merry Christmas, friends.

Day 129: I Love Christmas Time

I was excited for today. We decided to get a tree on December 1st, when the Holland Homies said that Praxis would begin selling live trees.

Holland Homies is a Facebook Group for Expats to share best practices and inside knowledge like where to find stuff like tortillas and corn syrup and to share upcoming events and news.

Charlie woke up today to find a plastic stocking full of marshmallows in his shoe from Zwarte Piet. He wants to save them to make Rice Krispy treats.

He was excited to open the first window of his advent calendar. He says the chocolates here taste better!

After hanging out at the house all morning, we headed out to pick our tree. The guy at Praxis was very friendly and spoke English, but said he’d charge for that service. I love when people are friendly and funny. While we went in to pay for our tree and drove our car around to pick it up, the funny guy forgot and gave our tree to someone else. I can laugh about that, but isn’t that weird?? How does that happen?? I try to not make anything a big deal, and just flow with whatever happens. Luckily my family followed along and we just picked another “Dr. Seuss” tree from The Czech Republic. Juliana didn’t like any of them and the funny guy just told her these trees weren’t from Disneyland. I giggled.

Jeff and I tied the tree on top of the handy minivan, in the cold rain. I think today was the coldest day since we’ve been here! We then walked across the way to the carnival like booth selling the holiday hot item – Oliebollen.

These are really popular on New Year’s Eve and supposedly people line up to buy them. They are dough like pastries, sort of like donut rolls. Some are filled with raisins, cream, apples or just plain and topped with powdered sugar. We took ours home, and I bet these would be great fresh out of the hot oil! I love celebrating new traditions that others love.

Our tree is now home and waiting for Oma and Opa to come back tomorrow to help us decorate it. We didn’t ship any of our Christmas decorations, so we’ll need to buy a few new Dutch ones.

And finally, we had a wonderful dinner with some new friends who invited us over. What a great way to start December! Life is good.
