Day 27: I AM – We Are Legally Nederlands Residents!

Image
If it were only so easy to have everything in one place, one portal, with all the checklists and to do items, life would be so easy! I see a business opportunity!!

The first time Jeff and I heard about the expat center was totally random. We were walking around looking for housing and were getting hungry and looking for some place to eat. I looked up and saw the I AMsterdam logo and the bike in the window, and that is what caught my eye. Of course, I was curious and dragged Jeff with me to check it out. There was so much knowledge in this place, with helpful, knowing people!  Who knew? Who knew that this is the place we would eventually need to visit and why didn’t anyone tell us?  In the portal we create one day, we’ll make it easier for other expats to find their way!

So today we had an appointment to meet with this government center to register as residents of the Netherlands. We brought our passports and apostilized documents of our birth certificates and marriage certificate. We filled out paperwork and signed our life away. The good news is, we are now officially residents and I can officially work here if I want to.  We have all been assigned BSN numbers – basically a Social Security Number that is linked to government services such as doctors, insurance, dental care and taxes. The number is ours permanently, even after we leave.

The thing that really frustrated me on principle only, was that Jeff and the kids were granted residence for 5 years. I was only allowed a 1 year permit. WTH??  I have to prove that we’re still married in order to stay here after a year!  I have to reapply to stay and ask for an extension. I guess I’ll need Jeff to come with me and sign on my behalf that we’re still together. That just makes me mad. I understand why they might have that standard, but it doesn’t seem fair or just. Do you?

Here’s my crazy husband, playing with me for this picture. I liked the wild wallpaper and matching coffee mugs… not very Dutch like, though!

Here are my 5 year resident kids – without their mother!!  GRRRRrrrrr…..

Here’s the official letterhead!  Kinda cool, right?

Dag – Tot siens!! xo

Day 26: New School Orientation

Believe it or not, I didn’t take a single picture today. That’s a first!  I think I was too busy listening and being present at the kids’ (and parents’) orientation today.  The best part of the orientation was that our big kids disappeared with their groups and were seen around campus smiling and following after their new peers. After all the testing and information sharing, there was a BBQ lunch for everyone. Our kids ate with their new friends and Jeff and I enjoyed chatting with and getting to know some of the new families.

The second best part of this new school, is that it fosters community and wants parents to feel welcome and a part of the school – not only for the kids, but for the international community that we are. To feel like we have a place to be and to gather and to build friendships and community. I love this. It’s what I’m good at – I love people. I love hearing their stories and learning from one another.

It felt a little bit like home too – a very diverse, multicultural community with several different languages spoken, and several different ethnicities from all around the world, gathered together.

We’re all excited to begin this next phase of our lives.

We loved seeing so many pictures of the first day of school from so many of our friends on Facebook today. It did feel strange to not be there with you and to walk to school through the neighborhood together. Seeing the pictures of the first day is like a milestone – representing change and growth and newness. Loved it. And hope to see more as more friends continue new beginnings too, just like us.

xo

Day 25: Heat Wave

It was 90 degrees here today and I think we melted. We went to try out a local church this morning and literally almost passed out from the heat. We made it through the intriguing sermon, but were a bit light headed before we left.

Afterwards, we ventured over to Sally’s house to pick up an extra transformer they had for us to borrow for our old tv and PS3 for the kids. We didn’t plan on staying long, but all of us were enjoying their company and playing with their dogs and cats. We took a walk over to the Amsterdamse Bos to check out the jousting festival that was taking place in the forest. It was too hot to walk around in the sun, and we just hung out in the shade and shared stories before walking back to their house.

We had planned to take a drive up the coast this afternoon but were warned to watch out for the beach traffic.  We just wanted to go for a long drive in an air conditioned car and chose to see where my Uncle Adrian used to be stationed in Holland in Den Helder. By the time we got up to Den Helder and came to the roundabout to take us out to the sea, the traffic was lined up from two different spots on the circle with at least 100 cars each attempting to return from the beach. We decided to just continue to drive around the roundabout and continue back the way we came. There was no way I wanted to wait in that traffic circle for another hour.

Image

Instead, we found ourselves at a random snack shop, hoping to find a bathroom and something to snack on. We actually had a great time enjoying snacks and playing pool together before heading home.

It’s still hot outside and is very hard for the kids to go to sleep. We’re trying to get them to bed earlier than usual since school is ready to begin and we’re on no type of schedule whatsover. But we didn’t even have dinner until after 8 pm.  Oh well – we’ll figure it out this week regardless, right?

We hope that all our friends back in Sunnyvale enjoy their new teachers and middle school and have a great first day back to school tomorrow. We’re kinda missing being there to walk to school together and to see each other again, after a busy summer!  Wishing you all the best.  We start orientation at our new school tomorrow.  New beginnings…

Day 24: I Am (Almost) Home

I feel like I’m almost at home now. My comfy couch created a comfy nook in our great room and I love it.  We were busy cleaning the house, I was in my pjs with makeup under my eyes and my hair in a messy ponytail, when the previous tenants of our house came by to pick up their mail and stayed and chatted for awhile, giving us so many tips and shared stories and I didn’t want them to leave!  Sally has been an expat since she was a kid and has lived in 9 different countries!  Her insights and attitude were inspiring and I wanted to hear more of her stories. We exchanged contact info and are planning to meet for coffee next week! Yippee!

Gerard and Anita and Kelsi came over to spend the day with us.  They brought dutch treats for the kids and a beautiful houseplant for us.  Thank you guys! We had coffee and cake when they arrived, and then took the tram up to the city for a few hours.

Wooden Shoe Boat on the Amstel

It was so hot today, that we thought we’d go up to the Albert Cuypmakrt and walk around in the outdoor market place. It was over 30 degrees here (80+ Fahrenheit) and we were all a little uncomfortable with the heat. However we joked about enjoying the sunshine now because winters are long here.  We searched forever for a normal ice cream cone and couldn’t find one. We ended up at a McDonald’s for McFlurry’s and Sundaes and a nice, tall coke filled with lots of ice.  They typically don’t serve ice here or water for free.Image

Image

Afterwards, we walked back home from the tram and made tacos for dinner.  We sat outside on the patio in the bit of shade we had.  Even though it was hot out, coffee is always served after dinner.  We had a drink together and then said goodbye to our guests.

Image

Image

(Too bad the ice cream truck drove up after we already had dessert!)

I’m glad to be sitting with the fan on and the windows open on my new comfy couch.  And check out what’s on TV – Jeff found a way to get NFL game day casts on the computer and hooked it up to the TV. He’s happy. Life is good.

Day 23: New Couch & New Experiences

How many days until school starts??  I’m ready and the kids are ready too. How about you?  We are ready for a routine and structure again, and to make new friends.  And I’m ready to not be the E-ticket ride!  😉

Today our IKEA couch arrived in four large boxes. I decided to surprise Jeff and assemble it myself!!  Image

I think the couch was much easier than the bookcase – less steps to follow. J helped me align the large pieces at the end. We then played around with it and the rug to see how to make it fit the best in the space.  We can’t sit on the cushions for 24 hours as they have to fluff up fully otherwise the stuffing with get squished and not fluff up again (I think that’s what they said in Dutch when explaining the warranty!)

Image

Tomorrow I’ll post a picture with the slipcover and cushions on it. I think I’m going to like this cozy little nook.

Today is Friday and the Amstelveen marketplace had a farmer’s market/bazaar going until 4 pm. After the couch assembly, we were able to get over there for awhile. We learned that parking spots are very small and driving through a parking garage is very tight and challenging. I don’t know how my mini-van will do here!  I think I’ll be doing a lot more bike riding!!  We found some great frites, fresh produce and delicious cookies. We also met another family from our school, when they heard us speaking English.

Image

Char and Owen had fun playing with all the boxes from the last two days and turning them into boats and houses and RVs. Hopefully it doesn’t rain for a few days!

Image

And finally this evening, Jeff and I went to the Makro – a big, warehouse like store similar to COSTCO, to do some shopping. It was nice to go there, but I found it a bit overwhelming – probably because I was overtired again. It would be really fun if I could read the labels and understand what is what. We spent more than 5 minutes trying to pick butter, just to give you an example. And then we were looking for something to clean the bathrooms, and we had no idea which one was the best. We picked something that had a picture on it – showing sinks, and showers. Hopefully it’ll work. Everything just takes a little longer when you don’t know the language.

I did have fun though, perusing the different wines from different countries, and the cookies and candies.  I think it’ll get easier and easier as I understand more.

Day 22: Our Shipment Arrived!

Today was much better, thanks for asking!  I don’t mind bad days because they are part of life and I don’t expect everything to always be a-ok. It’s normal, I get it. And I just have to wait it out (like I did) and wait for the sun to shine again (which it did!)

Image

Early this morning, the truck arrived with our stuff. Now we didn’t ship all our stuff and the truck that brought our stuff was really big and understuffed, which is a good thing! You see there isn’t that much storage space in this big house. And I kind of was enjoying living with little, but I know our stuff will bring comfort. Like our rug and rocking chair and bean bag chair. Ahh… soft and cozy, and gezellig! I like comfy places and it’s getting there.

Image

We had 63 boxes total – including 1 big orange bike, 2 chairs, a stool, a rug and other miscellaneous stuff that makes us feel comfy. That’s not that much for 5 people and an international move, right? We left our furniture at our old house as a guest house and hope our friends and family enjoy staying there from time to time.  Now we just have to wait for our table and couch to be delivered – hopefully tomorrow and then we’ll be ready for you to come and visit!!  😉

Actually, while I was unpacking, Ruth came to visit. She is Simone’s sister-in-law, and lives in the area. 3 minutes away, in fact… how crazy is that? Simone, is Debbie’s Dutch friend, who I met before moving here. And today she asked Ruth to stop by to bring us flowers as a welcome. How cool is that??  I am so touched. I am all about relationships and can really give a crap about stuff. And seeing Ruth at my door, carrying a beautiful flower basket just touched my heart. And that she went out of her way to greet us… wow. Thank you. I love them and love that you both reached out to make us feel welcome. Thank you Ruth and Simone!!

Image

Oh, and there’s a story about the wooden shoes too. You see Jeff and I came to Holland 14 years ago and these wooden shoes were made especially for me by Helma’s brother who runs a wooden shoe factory. We toured the factory and he shaped these to fit my feet. How cool is that? They have been sitting on my porch at home in Sunnyvale for the past 12 years so everyone would know I’m Dutch! And because I love them. So now they’re back on Dutch soil to great our guests at our front door. Doesn’t that make you want to come over for a cup of coffee. Just show up and I’ll make you a cup.  😉

We worked all day to unpack and to make our house feel more like a home until it was time to go meet the Petersons again. The kids really wanted to see each other to celebrate Ben’s birthday and to do a sleepover. We joined them for cake and ice cream and then brought their boys over here for one last sleepover before they leave Holland tomorrow. Happy Birthday Ben!!  Image

Day 21: Three Weeks and A Little Off

Amsterdam, Central Station
20120815-213142.jpg

We left Sunnyvale three weeks ago today and by all means, I think we’ve done a good job getting settled pretty quickly and efficiently, until today.

Today just didn’t feel right and we had a few things go wrong and a few plans changed. No big deal, but you know the feeling when you just feel off? That was our day.

We made plans to meet up with the Peterson’s today, but both Scott and CJ weren’t feeling so hot. We were going to meet at the Nemo
Museum, but then plans changed.

Instead we went over to the music shop to buy CJ a musical keyboard. I had promised we would buy him one for his birthday when we moved here and we finally had a break in our schedule to get over to the music shop. All went well until we got home. The stairs at our house are very small and narrow and curve upwards. I was bringing up the keyboard stand in it’s box and missed the last small step and stumbled, spraining my big toe and bruising my right hip. I hate getting hurt and hate falling. This put me in a sad mood. We ended up hanging out for another hour or so, for me to recover and to give CJ some time to play on his new toy.

It was so hot and humid today and sitting around the house all day with three kids wasn’t in the plans either. My foot felt a little better so we decided to take the tram to Central Station and see the Nemo anyway.
20120815-213156.jpg

I was so glad we actually got out to enjoy the day, even if it was later than we had thought. Central Station was busy as ever and the sun was shining brightly. We started to walk over towards the Nemo and enjoyed seeing the floating Chinese restaurant and the brand new Starbucks in the Double Tree building. There was a walking bridge that pedestrians and cyclists could use to get over to the Nemo. While we were walking, we had an incident. Juliana fell on the non-slip, sand-paper like surface with a little help from a “friend” and skinned her knee so bad and so deep. When I knelt down to help her, I fell over from the pain in my big toe that I was ignoring. We were a mess. And I didn’t carry the first aid kit today because we were just going to an indoor museum, and didn’t think we would need it. So much for our plans.

I ran over to a little floating boat bar and asked for a napkin and perhaps a large bandage. The man was so sweet and told me to bring her in. I cleaned her up with what he had and offered him a tip. He would not accept my money. I was thankful for his kindness and help.

20120815-213203.jpg

He didn’t have the right type of bandage so we walked back to the Starbucks to cool off and for a drink and to see if they had a first aid kit. They were so helpful and sweet to us and bandaged up her knee for me. I was so thankful and appreciative, especially because they spoke English too and could understand me. That was comforting.

By this time, Nemo was about to close and I was just done with that idea. We made our way back at rush hour to the tram and endured a jam-packed filled ride, along with three loud, smelly, uncivilized drunk men that scared us and made us almost get off. But if we would have gotten off, we wouldn’t have seats for the two injured girls, so we just rode it out. Go with the flow, right?

20120815-213311.jpg

Tomorrow is another day. And our shipment arrives from over the seas and I can’t wait to see all our stuff, especially my comfy rocking chair.

Hope you had a good day!! And Happy Birthday to my favorite little 6 year old!! Miss you.

Day 20: School Appointments and Running Errands

It’s hitting me that we live here now. When people ask me where I’m from, it’s a bit confusing. I first want to say the Bay area. But then I wonder if I should say that I’m from Amstelveen. And when I write or think about home, is home in Sunnyvale or is home in Amstelveen? Home used to always be Thousand Oaks in my mind. But then the last few years Sunnyvale was home and felt like home. Where is home when you move?  I guess now home is where my family is and when I say I’m going home, then home should be where they are now. But it’s still confusing. Does that make sense? Where do you consider home?

So now that I’m settling into my new home, I have work to do. Today we brought the kids to their new school to meet with their guidance counselors and to meet with the health nurse. Did you know that their school has a full time health nurse every day? And she hired a dentist to come to visit the school every month to ensure that kids are having the proper dental care. We even got to see the dentist’s office on campus. How cool is that? And this nurse was so sweet and smart and has been loving her job for the past 21 years. I think I have a crush. I loved hearing her speak and explain what was needed and what was offered and what to expect. I think they will take care of the whole child at this school and I can’t wait fo them to start – for several reasons!    They gave the kids this cute little book that the students wrote to help new kids from all over the world feel welcome.

Image

In between appointments, we drove around the town, getting familiar with the roads and shops and the layout of the  city and how everything connects. Our town is very quaint and there are a lot of services available.

After we got home, I had to make some calls. IKEA hadn’t called me back to replace the table with the missing parts from last week. Here you have to call a 900 number for customer service and they charge you 15 cents per minute!! Can you imagine that? And there is usually a wait time of 5 minutes!  UGh – I don’t really like that process but my hands are tied. They said they are sending me a new table by mail and it should be here soon. If not I should call back. I also need to call back to get the assembly guys back here to assemble it once it arrives. Details, details.  Not easy when they are speaking Dutch to me. Luckily they’ll try to speak English too. I’m so thankful for that!

I had a new experience today. I called to make a hair appointment as my hair is drier and frizzier than ever and I couldn’t even stand to touch it or brush it. I rode my bike into town and figured out the new locking system. Parking in the town center is challenging and expensive and biking or riding are much better options. Luckily, the hairdresser also spoke English and was very friendly. He blew our my hair straight and shiny and I love it again. The little things…

Later when I was home and cleaning up the house, I looked out and saw these swans swimming on the canal. Aren’t they beautiful? I just had to stop to watch them.Image

Isn’t he pretty?

I got to talk to my family again today. They were camping together at Twin Lakes until the rain came crashing down so hard and it sent my sisters home a day early.  My mama also got really sick. Luckily, she only has a flu bug but when I called she was at the hospital with a fever and chills that must have scared them when it wouldn’t come down. When she heard my voice, she started to cry a little bit. This made me very sad too, as I can’t get back (home) to her very quickly as I normally could. But I know if I needed to, I could always go back. I felt the distance today. But am so happy to say that she was leaving the hospital today and was heading back to camp. She is such a strong woman! I love you mama.

Hope you all had a good day! xo

Day 19: Vondelpark * Rijksmuseum * Houseboat * Tram

We’re getting better at preparing for the day. Each kid carries a backpack and today I gave them each a checklist:

1. Backpack

2. Water Bottle

3. Light Rain Coat

4. Umbrella

5. Something to Read

All of these things are to help them take care of themselves. They can carry their own pack and their own jacket and always have something to drink. If they want to add more, they can, but they still have to carry it all day. Teaching them to take care of themselves while also being responsible for their own stuff!

We were happy to venture out to meet the Petersons again today. We met in the Museumplein and walked over to Vondelpark together. We got a later start than usual, and everyone was already hungry soon after we gathered. I had read about a cooking cafe for kids and both my youngest, and Kris’ youngest like to cook so I thought this would give us a destination to seek out in Vondelpark. I’m good at coming up with ideas, but not always so good with following up with the details! For example, I knew the name of the restaurant in VP (generally), but didn’t jot down the address, hoping to explore the park and venture upon it by chance. Not such a good idea when you have 8 hungry people! Eventually we found it after stopping to ask at least 3 strangers. But I think the kids had a good time making their own pizzas and ham and cheese croissants. It was a fun experience at the Kinderkookkafe.

Image

After the kids refueled, they wandered over to a playground and enjoyed running around together in a new park. They found some fun swings where 3 people could swing at once. I loved seeing their smiles. The boys then disappeared for a while and we could see their shadowy figures through the trees. They found some tall pieces of wood and were building a teepee. I think they could have stayed for hours.

Image

Image

Weather reports showed that afternoon thunderstorms were quite possible so we had planned to check out the Rijksmuseum. The good news was that the rain never came. We still were able to walk around and enjoy the art at the museum. Luckily, only a part of the museum was open as the rest is under renovation. This proved well for the kids as their attention span for art is not that high. I actually enjoyed hearing their perspective about what they saw and what stood out. J and I kept trying to determine from what angle the light source was used to paint the layers of light and shadow. We never did agree, but I think that will help us to discover some new art research. Our family favorite exhibit was one from 2008, which was a rather unique and unusual Grandfather Clock, that was in the shape of a tall, grandfather clock, with a frosted glass face with dry erase numbers written on the face from the inside. Behind the glass, it appeared a man was inside the clock and counting the minutes passing by erasing the arms of the clock and re-writing them again. It was to show the passing of time and we all got a kick out of it. Of course we all loved Rembrandt’s Night Watch painting and discussed how the sword looked three-D, how we liked the shadow of the hand on the other man’s jacket, and the element of surprise with people’s faces hiding and peeking through the crowd.

Image

After our brief tour of the museum, we played in the Museumplein again as the kids love the big, flat swing and wanted to share it with the Peterson kids.

Image

If the kids are happy, I’m happy and so we stayed for awhile. We then walked to the tram and took it to visit the P’s houseboat, which was very cozy and nicely decorated in a Dutch theme with blue and white and red colors. I think it would be fun to stay on a vacation houseboat. However, I felt a bit sad for them, as the owner’s houseboat was parked directly in front of their vacation boat which completely obstructed the view of the water. They did have a small window portal from the bedroom to look off and see a bit of water, but if they wanted to see more, they had to wander over to the owner’s floating backyard or walk to the top and sit on top of the houseboat. They of course, were gracious and the owner was very kind to them, so no worries… The kids all had fun exploring and being in a new environment with their California friends.

Image

I had fun sitting with Kris and just relaxing as I felt tired by the end of the day… staying up until 1 am watching the Olympic Closing Ceremonies was probably not such a good idea! Did you watch them too?

The kids and I soon said goodbye and found our way to a new tram stop and journeyed home on the Metro. On the tram, J asked me if I missed California yet. She said she did a little bit but knew that we weren’t going back any time soon, so she really didn’t think about it much. I told her we would feel home sick at times but that we’ll adapt and that we have to live in the moment, which she is doing. She is very smart and realizes that she must manage her expectations, even though she doesn’t know that is what she is doing. I believe that happiness comes from when your expectations are in alignment with your reality. She expects to live here and doesn’t expect to move back home, so she’s happy. Pretty simple. I shared with her the expression that the grass isn’t always greener, and she started to sing a Justin Bieber song about the same topic. It’s amazing, but I think she gets it. We are here now and our job is to enjoy BEING just where we are. As a family, we chose to come on this journey and so we are enjoying our green grass, so to speak, right here, right now. And we’re enjoying keeping in touch with our family and friends back home too. Little C especially loved talking to one of his BFFs this afternoon, as you can see by his smile.Image

All is well and today was another good day. I hope you had a good day right where you are too. xoxo

Day 18: Family Day in Schijndel

20120812-224758.jpg

We just finished spending nearly 12 hours with family and we’re all talking about when we can get together again. That should summarize how much fun we all had today.

I love how the Dutch entertain. It’s very laid back and there is no sense of hurry or rush. People sit together and really just enjoy one another’s company and that’s entertainment. The young and the old together, drinking coffee, working together, eating together and playing together. I’m not used to sitting still for so long at any given time, so this is new for me and I am beginning to become more comfortable with it.

Today we enjoyed coffee and homemade delicious chocolate torte cake with homemade whipped cream soon after we arrived at Gerard and Anita’s house. Afterwards, Anita set out a lunch buffet for us which included some new foods to taste like filet americanse, and kruiten boter (which I hope I’m spelling correctly!). Several types of Hagel slag were also available and we all made our own sandwiches or broetjes as they call them. Oh and sandwiches are made with butter, which I remember my mom making but I forgot about it. We typically make sandwiches with mustard and/or mayo. I love doing things differently and lunch was delicious.
20120812-222628.jpg

After lunch, the kids all went to play the Wii, and Risk and Twister. They played outside with balls and a hula hoop, and everyone played together, including the high school girls. This was impressive as the girls are beautiful and sweet and interested in family and being together. I loved that they weren’t too busy or too “cool” to want to hang out. I’m impressed and thankful and J Is making plans with K to get together again next week. Love it.
20120812-224520.jpg

After lunch, Opa Tijn came for a visit. We all sat out on the patio and enjoyed another cup of coffee. Opa Tijn doesn’t speak any English and just talked to us in Dutch like we understood. One day we will understand better but for now it was just fine. Anita and Gerard did a great job bridging the language barrier and we all enjoyed just being together.
20120812-222731.jpg

When Opa Tijn left to go to a party, we left to go to Rio and Helma’s house to visit and check out the dairy farm. We all had so much fun.
20120812-224835.jpg

The kids rode on a tractor and learned how the harvester machine worked. They got to pet and feed the cows and learn how
milk production works. I got to be Rio’s helper for the evening milking at 6 pm. 20120812-224125.jpg

Stella & Dot on the farm!!
20120812-224452.jpg

The cows are milked twice daily, once in the morning at 7 am and again at 6 pm. It was a very cool experience. Little C was having fun riding a pedal go cart around… Just good old fashioned fun. And then they all went swimming and moved the trampoline close to the pool so they could jump off and into the pool. I think they had a great day! I know I did.
20120812-224611.jpg

And the day wasn’t even over yet. There was still time for a BBQ! Lil’ C loved helping Gerard with the grill and CJ was happy using the deep fryer to make fresh frites. The girls all helped with setting the table and bringing food out. We had a large variety of mixed meats and sampled our first frickadel (spelling?) sausages topped with frites sauce, onions and curry sauce. Yum! Dinner was amazing and BBQing felt like home.
20120812-224544.jpg

The days are long here in the summer and we didn’t leave until past dusk at 9:40 pm! I hope we didn’t overstay our welcome. We were just having too much fun to leave! Thank you G&A&R&K for sharing your day with us and for all the delicious meals. Thank you Rio and Helma for having us over for drinks and snacks and sharing farm life with us. We had a wonderful day with y’all and look forward to seeing you again at our house.

Life is good!!
