Day 43: Summer

What was your favorite part of the day?

My favorite part of the day was when all 10 of us were in the pool at the same time. All the cousins and aunties and uncle were together in the water and this made me happy.

I didn’t take a single picture today and that is rare for me, especially with so many fun moments.

By not taking pictures and not being on my phone, I felt more fully present.

At dinner tonight, we all agreed to leave our phones down and it made a big difference to the experience. I know this should be obvious, but it’s not in my family, and I enjoyed us all being in the moment together with limited interruptions.

Life is good. Keep on loving each other and lifting each other up. I hope you had a good day.

Crazy Days and Going with the Flow

Today was crazy busy in a good kind of way and I am exhausted and thankful.

Juliana had shared a BuzzFeed with me about clean eating recipes for two weeks. One recipe luckily caught my eye and was the idea that became dinner tonight.

I got to the gym and did a lot of shopping. In between shopping trips, I threw chicken breasts and salsa verde into the crockpot and showered before heading out again with my wet curly hair.

I zipped through the last store and dropped off the groceries before heading out again for a meeting.

And the rest of the day took over from there. I forgot an appointment and had to rush around and try to still squeeze it in.  Christian decided when I picked him up that he needed to do some extra swimming and could I please bring him to the pool. It wasn’t on my plan either, but I went with it and squeezed the pool visit in too.  This was a highlight of my day. I loved just  watching him swim and sitting in the sunshine by myself.

I told him we had to hurry though because I had to bring Charlie and his friend to their appointment.

We made it out of the pool and home on time to pick up the boys and get them to where they needed to be. Juliana decided she wanted to drive with me to drop them off. After we dropped the boys off, she didn’t want to go home just yet because she knew I would be distracted by all of the things still left on my to do list and she wanted time alone together.

Okay, when your teenage daughter decides she wants to spend time with you,  you don’t say no. Of course, I had a huge list of things I wanted to do in the next hour, like folding laundry and finishing dinner and tidying up a little bit and returning phone calls and emails. But I let it all go and enjoyed the moment with her. This was the best choice, even if I did have a quiet moment of anxiety before getting to yes. She makes me smile and I love being with her and am thankful she wanted to be together.

So dinner was a little later tonight and the side dishes weren’t prepared, but we had plenty of leftovers to go with the yummy, light chicken that cooked itself in the crockpot. I love that magical pot.

The kitchen got cleaned and most of the clutter picked up, just a little later than usual. The laundry? It’s still sitting there and can wait until tomorrow.

Happy kids, happy (tired) mom.

Life is crazy and good!

nAMaste and good night. xo

Indian Summer

We are all ready for fall. Charlie and Jeff got the Halloween boxes down from the attic today to begin decorating for our favorite holiday.
I love that he is so into the holidays and being prepared. I will miss it when his interest wanes one day and he’s “too big.”

It has been so incredibly hot the last few days, that we wanted to wait for a cool morning to climb up the stairs into the stagnant heat. Today was the day, but it doesn’t feel like fall at all. I believe the high for today was 90 degrees.

I had a tennis match this morning and luckily we stayed hydrated and won despite the heat radiating off the court. It’s crazy to me to think that Megan is in Michigan and it’s raining and cold and we are in California and are burning up in the sun. Yin and yang.

When I came home, the kids wanted to go to the pool to cool off with their friends. I loaded up the van with drinks and snacks and pool gear and off we went to enjoy our Indian summer afternoon.

The kids enjoyed cooling off and playing games and I sat in the shade with a couple magazines, getting splashed for sitting too close to the deep end watching them play. Luckily it was refreshing and didn’t get my magazine or phone really soaked.

After the pool, we came home and decluttered the house before working together to get dinner on the table. Jeff used his sous-vide immersion cooker and made a spicy pork loin tonight. Juliana made the sliced potatoes and I made a few vegetable dishes, while Charlie and Christian set the table and got drinks for everyone. I love family meals and working together to make the magic happen.

Hope you had a good weekend and stayed cool in California.

Labor Day Weekend, California Style

This three day weekend we chose to stay close to home and to take it easy. Do you have a Labor Day ritual that you celebrate?

Yesterday we had our first tailgate of the college football season.

We brought lawn chairs and tables, coolers filled with beers and waters and food, as well as our portable BBQ. It was a hot day in the sunshine filled stadium.

Today the kids enjoyed swimming with friends and making new friends at the pool. Later we shared a delicious healthy dinner with our BFFs. I love when my kids get along with my friend’s kids and our husbands enjoy each other too. This makes me so happy.

I loved the simplicity of our staycation with friends and am so excited that we have one more day to relax as a family before heading back to our normal programming.

Happy Labor Day! Live it up and enjoy this wonderful life. xo

Water Play

I love water. Just being near it makes me happy. Today the kids convinced me to actually come in the pool with them and we all had fun together.

I got a GoPro camera for my birthday and the kids took it in the pool to play.

This provided hours of fun for all of us.

Charlie asked me to be the mama whale and he would hold on to my back as we swam together through the water. It took me a little while to figure out exactly how to swim the way he had in mind!

I told the kids I felt like I was five again, holding hands with my friend and playing with the kids. Juliana laughed and said “But you didn’t have an underwater camera back then!” She is too wise!

Today I was thankful for friends and time to play together in the water and the sun.

Namaste. Go out and play!

The weather is unseasonably warm in California for January. We really need rain and a state of emergency has been declared because of the drought. The kids had off from school to celebrate and remember Martin Luther King day. We spent the morning working together in our house and spent the afternoon playing tennis and swimming in the beautiful sunshine.

Life is good.

Autumn Day on the Delta

My favorite time of the year is summer time, but I think autumn might be a close second. Today we drove up to the Delta to spend the day with our friends. I loved the drive and experiencing the bright fall light and colors.

I love the open fields, old barns, and cows in the fields.

My favorite place to be is anywhere on the water with my family and friends. Today Rob took us out for a ride in his boat. I had my permagrin again and couldn’t stop smiling. Feeling the water splashing on me and the sun warming my skin is the best feeling. Thank you Rob for taking my kids and I for a spin!! We loved it.

Thank you Pat and Marcia for preparing a nice lunch for us. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck and relaxing, chatting and enjoying your company.

The kids loved jumping off Chuck’s boat and into the water. I had just as much fun photographing them. It was a perfect day!

Thank you Pat and Chuck for inviting us over. We had a wonderful day with you.

The drive home was just as beautiful as the drive there. We had a very busy yet fulfilling and fun weekend! We just need another weekend to rest now!! :-). Hope y’all had a great weekend too!

Beautiful sunset

The highlight of my day today was swimming with the kids. Typically I sit on the edge and watch them, talking with friends, or reading a magazine eating a snack and having a drink. But today I decided before we left that I would also go swimming.

I actually love swimming and the feeling of being in the water once I’m in. I just don’t like being cold and having to redo my frizzy hair afterwards. That’s what happens when your an adult. Kids don’t think of these things. They just enjoy the pure fun of being in the water.

I swam 15 laps and and also played with the kids. We touched the bottom of 13 feet in the deep end. We did handstands and back flips and got water up our nose. The volleyball was thrown around for awhile and we had water gun fights. I gave Charlie a piggy back ride and held Juliana like she was light and little again.

I loved being in the pool today with them and thought of Irma and how much she loved the water too. It’s great to be a kid (at heart!).

When was them last time you went swimming? It’s never too late for some fun!
