Goals and Intentions

Today I was listening to some tips from the top from Stella & Dot leaders. I still have my business for another month or two, although I have chosen to go out of business soon, as selling jewelry at home trunk shows is not for me. Learning what you don’t want or like to do is also important as knowing what you do want or like to do.  Sometimes making a choice to change is challenging because there are benefits to continuing what you’re doing even though letting go might create more space and opportunities to try new things.  Can you tell this was a tough decision for me?

Anyway, back to the tips from the top.   I was listening to a Stylist share her success story and how she became a leader in the company.  One of the things she mentioned was being clear about her goals. She wrote down her goals on several pieces of paper and had them everywhere so she could see them all the time. One list hung in her work space and another on her bathroom mirror. She carried one around with her and was always seeing her list. When she wrote her goals down, she wrote them as if she was already there.

For example, if I want to lose weight, which I think I do, but haven’t 100% committed to, instead of writing my goal as, “I want to lose weight.” I would write down my intention as if I was already there. It would look like this, “I am 125 pounds.”  This goal is unrealistic for me personally, but you get the point. She stated where she wanted to be and then worked towards that and all her actions were in line with how she was going to achieve that goal.

So I practiced that today, by setting an intention which I’m not 100% sure is my real intention, but I thought I’d pretend and play with it, outside my comfort zone to see what would happen.

I decided my goal is to become a better tennis player. Currently my level is a 3.0, which should be moving up to a 3.5 by the end of the year. So being a 3.5 is realistic, but being a 4.0 is a stretch, so my goal for myself was, “I am a 4.0 tennis player.”

Just saying that in my head was uncomfortable because I didn’t believe it. But I wanted to practice thinking about it and what that might feel like. When I got out to the tennis court, instead of telling myself I sucked or messed up, I told myself I was a 4.0 and I could and should hit harder. Guess what? I did hit much better than normal. I felt more powerful and more accurate and I played 100% better than my match on Sunday.

I learned or was aware again of the power of my mind in this simple exercise. I tend to forget and get lazy and just busy doing, that I don’t always stop to think if what I’m doing is what I want to be doing because I don’t have clear intentions and just let the busyness fill the space. When I do have a set intention or goal in mind, I feel accomplished and successful and I want to find a way to remember this so I don’t keep forgetting and can be more efficient.

I am setting goals (tomorrow).  🙂

I am a procrastinator!!

So tell me what you want, what you really, really want!  And go make it happen.  xo

My New Jewelry Box

20140204-224604.jpgCharlie helped me to build my new jewelry box.

I have collected an awesome collection from Stella & Dot over the past three years and wanted a place to store my collection.  I read about this ALEX chest of drawers from IKEA from another Stylist on our private message boards that worked well with our display trays.

Charlie and I worked for two afternoons putting together my new treasure box.  I gave him his very own tools as his early Valentine's Day Present and he was thrilled. He mentioned how long it was taking us to finish our project.   I was able to throw in some life lessons as we worked side by side. We had 6 drawers to build and it first it was a bit challenging. As we worked on, we got into a rhythm and were able to figure out the process, decreasing the time it took to complete each step.

I loved having him work with me and teaching him that sometimes work is easier with a partner. We also learned that at the beginning, things are harder to accomplish because we haven’t don’t the work before.

And as we repeat the steps, life gets easier as we learn and understand how things work.  As I was finishing one drawer, he was on to building the next. He was so industrious and focused and had so much fun building with me. He is learning that things take time and that as you practice, things get easier.

Life is Good!

Pretty Things

What do you find pretty that puts a smile on your face?

Today someone really liked my shoes and that made me smile because I love them and I loved that they loved them too. We shared a conversation and a connection over cute, whimsical shoes.

My shoes are “vintage” Kate Spade and you can find other pretty shoes by her here: Kate Spade Shoes

I have a new handbag from the spring Stella & Dot collection that is also pretty and makes me happy. I love the vibrant colors and pattern and that people like it and ask me where I got it. It’s a great conversation piece and I like to share the story about it and talk about Stella & Dot because it’s fun and also makes me happy.

You can find it on my website if you want one too: S&D how does she do it bag

The other pretty thing that made me smile today were beautiful tulips arranged in a pretty little vase. Again, women were chatting and sharing appreciation for the pretty little things in life. These flowers reminded me of the bunches in Holland that were readily available and inexpensive in all colors. They made me think of and miss my Dutch friends!

If you want to find tulips in California, they have them now at Trader Joes.

I like pretty things because of the stories and connections associated with them the most. What pretty things do you love?

GGG – Day 5 – Your Work

“I know you’ve heard it a thousand times before. But it’s true – hard work pays off. If you want to be good, you have to practice, practice, practice. If you don’t love something, then don’t do it.”
Ray Bradbury (born 1920);

Gratitude Gift Giving – Day 5. Think about the work you do everyday. Are you thankful for the opportunity to either work from home, work outside the home, work raising a family, or work at being retired? What do you get from your work that is a reward to you?

It’s kind of a cool way to think about work, isn’t it? Sometimes the word, “work” has a negative connotation, like it’s a bad thing. I think we should celebrate the gifts that we receive from creating valuable work, even though it is work and think about how our work creates meaning in our life.

My main job or work is to support our family, to raise happy, well adjusted, responsible and independent contributing members of our society and community, I take care of the domestic logistics and manage getting the kids to and from their appointments. I am thankful that I get to listen to them and support them with their athletics, academics, social, religious and friendship interests and get to be a part of their daily development and change. In addition, I also keep the house tidy, exercise, plan events, entertain, shop and maintain our home, as well as volunteer and help shape our community.

One other part time job I have is selling jewelry as a Stella & Dot Stylist. I love to wear and share cute jewelry, meet fun women at trunk shows, and talk about other things besides housework and make a little bit of money by sharing my passion with others. I love the women I meet and the stories we share and the support that is given to all of us. I love the knowledge I gather when we have team meetings and share best practices. And I love helping other women to feel stylish and cute. Check out my website if you’re interested in learning more about my work, becoming a hostess or maybe even a stylist like me! www.stelladot.com/adrianahartley

I am thankful for my work and the meaningfulness it gives to my life. I am thankful for the role that I chose and am thankful to my husband for supporting my choice and our choice for our little family.

What do you like about your work?

Today I’m thankful that my work allowed me to attend Christian’s cross country meet in the hills. I loved being there to see him participate and finish, even if he does look a bit tired!

Stella & Dot

20131004-234926.jpg

Tonight I hosted a Stella & Dot trunk show with several of my girlfriends. Stella & Dot was the entertainment for the evening, with women trying on jewelry and enjoying wine and nibbles and each other’s company.

I love when I have company over to the house because I clean and have a delicious smelling, uncluttered house! My floors are shiny and everything is in it’s place. I worked hard to get ready for tonight and was happy to open my home for several girlfriends.

I loved seeing everyone and watching them mingle and get to know each other, trying on jewelry and just having a good time.

I love that Stella & Dot was started by such an inspiring woman, Jessica Herrin, and that she shared her vision with other women and built a soon to be billion dollar company. Anyone can join and make it what they want it to be. For me, I do this as a hobby to afford my love of the jewelry and accessories and to get together with other women. Some women do this as a career and make six digit salaries! Some women build a team of women and coach and inspire other women to reach their dreams. I love that you can build your business to be what you want it to be and you can be part of a great team.

I had so much fun seeing everyone and only wish I would have had more time to socialize. Let’s get together again soon!

If you’re interested in checking out the company and spoiling yourself, come shopping online with me: http://www.stelladot.com/adrianahartley . If you want to earn jewelry for free, call me to host a party for you with your friends. And if you’re wanting to do more and become a stylist, I can help hook you up. Just send me a reply. All the best!

Redefining Yourself

How often do you think about transforming yourself? Kind of like a butterfly, transitioning from one stage unto the next and becoming something new?

Some people transition their bodies, others transition their spiritual selves, some their jobs, and others their hobbies or life style. Some transition with a significant event such as a birth, a death, marriage, divorce, college, kids leaving or returning, retirement or a new job. Some choose to make a change because they become uncomfortable in their current state and others just want something new. Some have no choice and some do.

There are so many ways to change and adapt and I love this process. I love recreating myself every few months. I almost seek out change and think about what I want to be when I grow up.

Sometimes change is scary and brings on anxiety. Some times it is spontaneous and desired and quick. Sometimes it takes forever. Sometimes change is welcome and sometimes it is not. But change is always constant. Isn’t that crazy?

We’re always constantly changing and we always have the opportunity to start again, to start something new. I do like this process of life’s journey and am thankful for the opportunities to begin again. If you’re not happy where you are, change it. Start over. Ask for a do over and begin again. Aren’t we lucky?

Right now I’m observing and wondering where I’ll go next. What do I want to do with my days once the kids go back to school? I have some ideas and I can’t wait to explore them and let them unfold. I just ordered my Fall Stella & Dot samples and can’t wait to start selling jewelry again. I played tennis today and can’t wait to have more time to be on the courts with friends and getting better, I hope! I can’t wait to explore the water ways on my paddle board with a friend. I am dreaming up a storm right now, while in this transitionary state. What are you dreaming of?

I used to like the quarter system at Cal Poly, because every short while we were starting over again. And if you didn’t like one class, you didn’t have to worry, because it would soon be over and the next one would be beginning.

One of my favorite mottos ( I have many) is this too shall pass. So if you’re stuck where you are, don’t worry. This too shall pass. And I hope the next phase will be more enjoyable for you. Just dream a little dream and enjoy the ride!

Namaste.
