Day 48: Summer

Tonight I am thankful for my BFF who always has good ideas and inspires me and picks me up and makes life great.

I am happy even when we are just in the same room, sitting on the beach or shopping on Santana Row.  It doesn’t matter what we do, I just love her energy.

Everyone needs a good friend like her! I am thankful for my sunshine!

Be well, my friends. And be a good friend!!

Day 36: Summer

Who would have thought I would enjoy being “home” this summer?

By being home and not being “busy,” I’ve created space for magic to happen and I am loving it.

I’m enjoying my kids and my friends and my home and my work and my husband. I’m enjoying the flexibility and the lack of stress and rushed feeling. I’m enjoying the opportunity to say yes and to create experiences on the fly without being too busy.

Today I finished our puzzle with Juliana and felt a sense of mindless accomplishment!

I love that the kids have come and sat by me and we have worked together on our puzzle throughout this past week, sharing conversation while we created patterns and filled the gaps. Thank you Nate and Becky for our gift!

I also love that Julie texted me first thing this morning to see what I was doing and to see if I wanted to head over to Santana Row for an hour just because. I wanted to sit in my jammies and drink coffee, but I can never say no to Julie and am always thankful for her spunk and drive and shared curiousity. She keeps me moving and exploring and I adore her!

I made her stop for a selfie because I loved the surroundings and pretending we were on holiday because we are! Thanks, Jewels!!

Later in the day, Juliana and I went out to celebrate her getting her driver’s permit yesterday by getting bubble teas and shopping together. I can’t believe we have another permitted driver in our house.

And for dinner tonight we took the advice of one of Juliana’s snapchat friends, and made Mac and Cheese and added BBQ chicken with melted cheese. We had a late, fun, family dinner at home and it was perfect.

I am going to bed early tonight as I was up really late last night and haven’t been able to shake the tired feeling all day today.

Nevertheless, today was good.

How was your Saturday?

An Abbasolutely Good Night

We went to see The Abba tribute band perform tonight at the Mountain Winery. It was my first time being to the winery and I can’t wait to go again.  This is a gorgeous venue and the weather tonight was Abbasolutely fabulous!  It was great to get out with friends on a Sunday night.

It was a great way to end the week. Hope you enjoyed your Sunday afternoon with those you love.

Life is good.

Day 4 – Spring Break in Alameda

Today was a beautiful day. The weather was warm and we explored parts of Alameda, particularly the Pinball Museum with friends.

All of us had a great time playing old fashioned pinball machines for three hours!  This was a cool way to spend the day.  I was happy that the boys were entertained and weren’t longing for Ps4s or xBox games.

Favorite game!

Sticking with the old fashioned theme, we stopped in at Foster Freeze for a hand dipped ice cream cone. This brought back so many memories from my childhood and begging my parents and aunts and uncles to take us to FF for summer comes.

Yum!

Alameda is a quaint little town. We loved driving down the streets and admiring the old Victorian homes. We also loved watching all the people outside enjoying the day playing soccer, splashing in the water, fishing, walking dogs, climbing trees and running.

Soccer in the park

This was another day where we had one idea and it expanded and became so much more. We weren’t on a schedule and were open to explore whatever came our way.  I enjoyed FaceTiming Juliana again and including each other in our day.  All is well.

Volcano in Japan

Life is good and I’m loving this break.

Tree lined streets in Alameda

We ended the day in Downtown San Jose for dinner at the Loft. It was absolutely delicious and a great way to end the day.

American bistro

Juliana mentioned that she liked seeing the American flags in my pictures and that flags are not as visibly noticeable in Japan.

Today was fun and I recommend visiting the Pinball Museum at least once.

Wanting to Be Several Places At The Same Time

20140626-220029.jpg

Ever have days like this?

I wanted to be four places at the exact same time. I see this becoming a trend – at least this week and I’m struggling with making decisions.  One of my birthday goals this year was to be more decisive, more quickly. I tend to think of all the possibilities and what will make everyone happy or cause the least discomfort and sometimes (no most times) I have the hardest time making a single choice. I’m practicing. Isn’t that what this life thing is all about anyway? It’s the practice… no one really has it all figured out. We’re just practicing. Don’t you feel better just knowing that?

So today I had to drop off Charlie and then I wanted to watch the USA – Germany game, hike at Rancho San Antonio with Julie and play grass volleyball with the volleyball girlfriends, who I adore. I decided to do all three, but that didn’t work.

So I decided to actually hike while the weather was still comfortable and checked the game score on twitter wherever I got reception. I had to postpone playing volleyball another week and just hope the ladies will play again next week and I won’t have to miss out on the bumping, setting, and spiking!  It was a crystal clear day and a beautiful day to be up on the mountain.

It made me miss my BFF Michele who has recently moved and won’t be hiking with me weekly. That’s ok though, because we’ll just find new ways to explore nature and solve the worlds’ problems in the couple hours we’re disconnected from the “real” world.

Julie and I actually stopped at the top to sit on the little bench and just soak up the sun and magnificent views. Now that she’s a working woman, we don’t get much time to work out together like we used to. Working out together used to be our social time too. Luckily she has this summer off for us to play more and get stronger together!

We saw a few deer, lizards, a snake,

birds, goats, and chipmunks while we were out.

I especially loved the big oak trees too, that remind me of Thousand Oaks.

Life is good and I’m glad I picked the hike today, especially since the USA lost.

Hope you had a love filled day. xo

Downtown Music Summer Series

Tonight we met up with Julie and her family to celebrate the summer concert series downtown. It was fun to be outside, people watching and enjoying a nice dinner together with our families. There were lots of crazy people there, dancing and just enjoying themselves.

I’m loving the sunshine and warm weather every day and am so thankful
for the change. I am slowly resettling and starting to feel at home again. Thanks for dinner, Julie!!

Life is good!

Being Loved

Being loved is the best feeling. Period. There is nothing better. Nothing.

This post is a bit personal, but aren’t most? We’re still resettling and it’s the honeymoon stage, and I’m loving all the attention being showered on my family. Thank you for all your shared calls, emails, texts and love and visits.

My parents drove up to my house to prepare for our arrival this week, as I’ve already mentioned. Seeing my kids love on them and tell them how much they’ve missed them and love them, is so nice to see and hear. The love dance is swirling through my house in little moments and details and it fills my soul. For example, I loved just watching Charlie work with my dad on fix-it projects around the house.

My friend Julie had coffee and snacks waiting for us this morning at her house. The kids played while the women chatted and sat and enjoyed her beautifully remodeled house and sunshine out on her patio. I’ve missed days like today and am so happy to be back and in her kitchen again…the best part of the home!

Tracy came by with her kids on bikes and asked if Charlie wanted to go to her house and play. Of course, he gladly went off and had a great time with his friends, riding his bike with them. Thank you, Tracy!

Julie and her kids stopped by with my favorite artichoke dip and stayed to chat for awhile before we headed to the pool.

Our swim club has a Friday night potluck BBQ that we all enjoyed with April and her family. I learned to play Bocce ball with the little ones and made some new friends while playing. Mom and dad joined us too, and it was great to sit outside and NOT have to cook or clean!!

Marilynne stopped by and dropped off a dinner for us. She’s been making a new Japanese curry and told me about it and I had mentioned I wanted to try it sometime. There she was with a delivery on my porch! Thank you ML! You spoiled us and it was quite delicious!

And the best part of my day was when my sisters and nieces arrived from Thousand Oaks. They drove 6 hours to come and see us and met us at the swim club. We went out to the parking lot to greet them and couldn’t stop hugging! It’s been almost a year, you know! Way too long for me! I’m thankful they drove the distance to be with us.

Reunited and it feels so good!

I am loved and I am thankful! Love y’all!

Day 348: I Am Home

20130708-182639.jpg

20130708-180449.jpg

It’s weird to think I woke up in my Holland house this morning, and I’ll be going to bed in my Sunnyvale home in a couple hours.

20130708-180823.jpg

It’s 2:30 am Holland time and just before dinner at home. I’m feeling a bit delirious, yet trying to stay awake for at least a couple more hours.

20130708-181336.jpg

I am happy to be home again, although I have to be honest and say I felt really confused coming back. I am feeling the transition, feeling sad as I let go of my house, community and friends in Holland and leaving Jeff behind for two more weeks. And then happy as can be, seeing my parents and April and my home and my neighbors and the neighborhood friends dropping by.

Julie came by for a cup of tea and biscuits, and the kids walked to the park and went swimming and rode bikes like we never left. They just picked up where they left off almost a year ago.

Mom made a pot of her spaghetti sauce and the whole house smelled good and welcoming.

20130708-181420.jpg
I cried as we were landing at SFO, afraid to land and seeing the airplane crash remains still on the runway. I felt really sad, thinking of what I am leaving behind and a bit anxious about the transition back to life as it used to be but isn’t anymore the same. I know it’ll all come together, as it always does…just breathe and relax, right? It’s all good. Life is good!!

20130708-182501.jpg
And I have the most amazing friends and family all around the world now. Can’t wait to catch up again! xoxo

Day 305: A Friend From Home

There is something really awesome about having a friend from home come to town for a visit. Julie arrived this morning and is spending the night. She brought treats for the kids – bubble gum, Jolly Ranchers and Goldfish crackers, that made them so happy. I was happy to hear her laugh and to listen to her stories about her kids and work and family. There is a comfort in having this reconnection again and it makes me excited to be able to play tennis again and share our stories as we enter the next chapter of high school with our kids. Julie and I have been friends since our boys were in preschool and she was one of my role models in deciding to have a third child. I’ve always admired her and am so glad she chose to come see us as part of her work trip to London.

She endured the children’s spring fair with me at their school, and meeting some of my local friends before we headed up to Amsterdam for dinner.

We dropped the kids off at home and took the tram into the city. The sun was shining later in the day, so it was actually nice to be walking around the canals together.

This last picture was taken at 9pm at the Westerkerk by the Anne Frank House. So gorgeous out tonight. We enjoyed a nice, quiet Thai dinner before heading back home on the bus.

Life is good. Happy Memorial Day, Veterans!!
