Swirling

Swirling.

Isn’t that a fun word?

It has a great ring to it and is fun to say out loud.

I love to swirl through crowds and to swirl my hair. I love swirling around my kitchen and through my house.  I love it when Jeff comes up and quickly surprises me and swirls me around. Some days there is so much stuff in my head that it gets all swirled together and I feel like my head is spinning.  But in a good sort of way.

Tonight I was at Juliana’s evening water polo game and captured this fun, swirling image after their exciting win:

What’s swirling around in your head this week?  I hope you enjoy the spin and wherever it takes you.

The Best Gift

I love surprises and unexpected attention.

Tonight I was sitting at my computer around 10 pm and Juliana was getting ready for bed. She came to me with a really hot wash cloth that had been warmed in the microwave to wash my face. She knows how much I love this ritual and how I don’t usually take the time to care for my skin the way I should. I’ve taught her to wash her face, but I don’t do such a good job of modeling this behavior.  When I do heat up a wash cloth and put it on my face, it brings such great and simple joy and I melt into the comfort of the moment of the warmth, taking my breathe away.

When she unexpectedly brought me this gift tonight for no reason other than she loves me, I felt like it was my birthday. I felt cherished and was so happy that she surprised me and took care of me, knowing how much I would appreciate this simple gesture. She knows I’m tired and she took a moment to connect and to pamper me before going off to her room.

Thank you, Juliana. I’m the luckiest mama!

If you’ve never heated up a wet washcloth in the microwave and enjoyed the steam on your face, you’ll want to try it. I think you’ll love it too.

Wishing you love and sweet, simple, connections and comforts.

Water Play

Watching her play makes me so very happy. I love being on the pool deck, seeing the water splash, listening to the whistles, watching the action and witnessing the changing light show in the sky. If I can’t be at the beach, then this is the second best place to be.

Seeing her work hard and to get the hang of this challenging sport makes me very happy. I love that she’s enjoying her experience and that I am able to be a witness.

Life is good.

Girls Water Polo

My daughter is playing water polo for the first time this year and I love it for so many reasons.

I love that she is trying a new and very challenging sport, and she doesn’t have any experience and is willing to go out every day and give it her best.

I love that it’s difficult and that she has to work hard too and she’s not giving up.  I like for her to be challenged. I like that she wants to go to practice, even on the weekends.

I like that she’s the one of the youngest and newest players on the team and that she gets to learn from her peers and actually got to play today.  I like that she has mentors and that she enjoys hanging out with her teammates.

I like that her coach is not like her and that he presents challenges to her way of thinking and operating. He’s good for her.

There is so much to learn by participating in team sports and I am thankful that she didn’t give up and that she tried and made the team and that she’s enjoying the experience.

It was a gorgeous and hot day in the San Jose hills today and I loved watching her shine and struggle, even in the 99 degree sunshine.

Life is good. I am proud of you, Juliana!! Keep up the good, hard and fun work.

1989

This was the year Taylor Swift was born and this was the name of her concert tour that we saw tonight at Levi Stadium.  It was an amazing and entertaining show that she performed in front of a sold out crowd of 50,000.

I love how authentic Taylor seems. She expressed her gratitude to her fans and for the experience of being with us tonight and worked hard the entire time to entertain us.

I liked the montages she had with her girlfriends, who shared their feelings about Taylor and life and love.  I loved that she brought on a new girl band from the UK and highlighted how great they are and sang along with them. She is not threatened by other strong women and I love this about her.  She also brought on stage her surprise guests, Julia Roberts and Joan Baez, as she sang about never going out of style.

The best little tidbit she shared with us was to embrace our imperfect life and to know what makes us happy.

I know Juliana and I and ML and J are very happy for having shared this experience on a warm and comfortable night at Levi Stadium. Thank you Taylor Swift for sharing your gifts and talents with all of us tonight and for being passionate about what you do. Your light shined!!

Life is fun and good!

Happy Together

image

My teenagers came home tonight from their service trip, after being gone for a week, and I could not be happier.

I cried when I saw their faces again and I know it’s only been a week, but it’s symbolic of what’s to come in the next couple of years, I know.

They are growing up and are independent, needing me in different ways. I love these compassionate and thoughtful humans and am so happy to have them back with us again. I loved coming home together, sitting around the table, eating ice cream and hearing their stories about their journey and experiences.

I am thankful they had such a great time and are safely home again.

Life As A Tourist

Tonight, Juliana and I sat on the couch of our Times Square hotel, reminiscing about our day and what to blog about…she mentioned our favorite Facebook blog, Humans of New York.

Throughout our time in New York, Juliana has mentioned being interviewed by Brandon Stanton, the blogger behind HONY. She’s constantly thinking of how amazing it would be to be featured on his Facebook page, fantasizing about what the humans of the world would say in the comments section.

So, back to our night on the couch when we were talking about blog themes, Juliana says, “You know mom, I know what I would say to Brandon if he saw me on the streets of New York, he would probably ask me what I was doing. I would let him know that I am a tourist, then I would say that in life, you are like a tourist. Sometimes you find yourself in foreign places, knowing where to go, yet not knowing how to get there.”

I love the way that girl thinks. We didn’t see Brandon today, but maybe there is still time to cross paths before we continue our journey. Fingers crossed, baby girl.

Vacation Begins

All the promotions and celebrations are complete and we had “nothing” to do today!!!! Yay, for summer vacation!

My kids were most excited for our kittens to arrive and have been counting down the days.

They are finally 10 weeks old and today they were finally ready to join our family, after gaining two pounds and being big enough to be spayed and neutered.

I love the feeling of anticipation and preparing and waiting for something BIG to happen.  Getting kittens was one of those BIG events for my kids and I loved seeing their joy and excitement.

Juliana said it’s only the first day of summer break and it’s already the best. She is one, lucky girl and I love her happy soul.

The kids and furry ones are having a slumber party together tonight. So far, so good and no meowing coming from their room.

Good night! xoxo

Celebrate Good Times

I love June. It’s my favorite month of the year.

Today my heart was full.

Charlie had his promotion ceremony, ending an era at our elementary school. We were quite proud of him and all of his accomplishments and involvement in our school community.

My parents were here to share the celebration and I am so thankful they took the time to come and be with us. Charlie was thrilled too!

ML and I have been working for months on the promotion dance for our middle schoolers.  Tonight was the event and we spent all day and night preparing and setting up and cleaning up with an awesome team of volunteers, including my mama. We were pleased with the results and were happy to see our kids so happy! I loved working side by side with my BFF, my mama, and friends.

Congratulations graduates from preschool through college! xo
Life is good and I am excited for summer vacation to begin this weekend! Be well. xo

On Writing

I write every day and sometimes this is a challenge. Like today.

I have a ton of things that happened that are somewhat interesting – maybe, but maybe not.

And some things I don’t always want to share. Or at least not right away.

Some things might be controversial, so I try to avoid sharing those or if I have a strong opinion, I prefer to keep quiet and keep the peace.  Probably boring… but it works for me.

Today involved boring and non-controversial stuff that is not really even worthy of sharing and doesn’t make for a good story.

I was present, taking the car in to check the tires, shopping, chopping veggies and cleaning fruit and making food ready to eat so everyone can grab and go! That was actually fun. I love to have healthy food prepared and watching my kids gobble it up as I clean and make it readily available.

My mom used to always cut fruit up for us for dessert and it was the only way I really enjoyed it. I think I loved that she prepared it and I got to watch her do it.  Isn’t that weird? I still love watching my friends (AL and ML) cut up fruit and veggies and love when they make them for me. They taste so much better when they do it!  Maybe that’s what my kids think too.

I think Juliana ate half of what I was preparing for the week, as I washed and chopped and packaged.  Probably not really half, but she was so happy enjoying herself eat as I worked and I loved having her in the kitchen with me. It was all worth it.

That was probably the highlight of my day, besides practicing hand stands in yoga. I have a lot to still practice!

There was one other really cool thing I learned about today and that is about Honor Flights.  The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport our heroes to Washington D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials, with all expenses paid. The inaugural Honor Flight tour took place in May 2005.  Tonight at my PEO meeting, another PEO who volunteers with this organization, came to share her story about the organization with us. She showed us a slide show and told us about how the organization works. She also brought a star guest, who was a veteran who actually went on one of these flights. Hearing his story and seeing him in tears as he remembered all the people who recognized him and cheered for him at the airports and honored him was so touching. It gives me chills just thinking about his story.  He will be 95 next year and still drives.  He reminded me of Algin Hughes, our PopPop and Colonel!!

If you’d like to learn more about Honor Flight and wish to make a donation, please visit their website:

And then just like that, sometimes writing has a purpose that shows up just by beginning to write.  Who knew?

nAMaste and thank you for reading my writing. xo
