Date Night

Juliana and her friend went to see Justin Bieber tonight, finally unwrapping their Christmas present.  They were very excited and I felt anxious to drop them off on their own.

Jeff and I took them to dinner and escorted them safely through the entrance before leaving them.

We then had several hours for our own date before heading back to pick them up again. We went to dinner and then out for ice cream, where we felt like flys on the wall at the Santa Clara Mission Creamery observing and listening to college student conversations. We definitely didn’t fit in with the “strange” college characters.

It was fun to sneak away during the school week. I loved seeing how happy and thankful she was too.

Life is good.

Simple Date with my Daughter

Our schedules are busy. Our lives are full. We long to create space and to spend meaningful time together.

Today we decided to walk 2.2 miles together to pick up my car from the dealer. We enjoyed the journey and the quiet time together, feeling the wind on our faces, watching the gray clouds roll in and noticing things we don’t normally see from the car.

After we got the car, we continued our date with French fries and chicken strips from Chick- Fil-a, and just sat together, watching the rain fall down talking about life.

I’m thankful she still wants to be with me and that we made time for each other. Thanks my sweetheart, teenager!  I love you and our crazy journey together!!

Threading Together Some Monday Fun

Mondays.

Do you like them?

I sometimes do. It’s like a fresh start to the week and to start over again.

Today was slow to go though. I had a great weekend and woke up feeling blue, knowing that my sister and my niece were heading home.  It made me sad to watch her car drive away, wishing that we lived closer to each other.  I wanted to jump in the front seat, right next to her and go with her wherever she went. That didn’t happen. Instead, I wiped the tears away and went inside to clean.  That’s what I do when I’m sad or mad. It feels like it gives me a little control over my situation when my emotions are out of whack.

I also had anxiety because our kitten had to have surgery today and I was worried about her all day. We learned she’s basically a freak of nature, and that when she was spayed, they didn’t quite get everything out which is very rare. She’s been acting like she’s in heat, which is no fun either.  They had to go and do exploratory surgery to find the extra ovarian tissue. Poor baby, girl.  Now she has to wear a cone for 2 weeks before she goes back to have her stitches removed. I feel so sad for her and we have to give her medicine twice a day for two weeks.  *big sigh*

The good news was that Jeff came home early to drive with me to pick her up and we had a mini-weird date enjoying the 45 minute car ride in traffic. We brought Zuma home and Juliana watched her and got her set up safely and comfortably away from our other cat.

When everyone and every cat was taken care of, Jeff and I snuck away for a quick Monday night Happy Hour, which made everything all right and settled my mind.  We took a moment just for us and this made me happy.

Mondays are good.

Life is good.

How was your Monday?

Wedding on the Beach

We celebrated a family wedding tonight on the beach in Santa Cruz. It was really nice to see some of my aunts and uncles and cousins, as well as my parents. Plus, I had the added bonus of a date night. Tonight was one of those perks of repatriation and being back home again. I don’t have to miss out on family events and that feels really good.

I liked hearing the wedding vows and watching two people in love. I liked hearing the waves crash on the beach and hearing the seagulls and sea lions roaring.

Dancing with my family was a highlight of the evening. I also especially loved the photo booth and being silly. Those things just make me laugh and I kept finding different people to take pictures with me.

Day 186: Sunday Family Day

How was your day, honey?

Our day was full and I wouldn’t exactly call it a day of rest, which is what we originally planned.

Charlie and Christian had friends sleepover last night. For some weird reason I was excited to get up early and have coffee and make them all pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. I remember how happy my Grandma used to be when she made food for us. I had that same feeling today. The little boys had so much cooking with me and flipping pancakes in the air. We were all laughing together and breakfast was fun.

While enjoying breakfast, we also watched the men’s final Australian tennis championship. Wow! They are so strong and powerful, focused and intense. I loved watching Murray and Djokovic play and wish I could play like them! The games lasted for almost 4 hours…kinda like running a marathon. At the same time, since I can’t sit still, I cleaned up breakfast dishes and began making my first pot of pea soup, or erwtensoep as they say in Nederlanse. In order to make it, you boil dried peas with bacon and a bay leaf and salt for 45 minutes. While they are simmering, you chop up a carrot, an onion, a leek, celery root and fresh parsley. All of the veggies are then added to the pot for another 30+ minutes until they are nice and soft. Then I took a hand blender and puréed it all together until it was thick and creamy. Meanwhile, I boiled the rookworst ( sausage) to add to the soup.

Barbara and Dennis joined us for a late lunch and we finished the whole pot less one small cup! I didn’t even have time to take a picture to show you! Luckily everyone loved it because my kids had never tried it before. I’m so glad they love another Dutch dish!

We had quite the busy day. After everyone left, Jeff and I went for a run together in the slush. It rained last night and this morning, and our winter wonderland turned to slush. The white covered ground came back to life again and the top of the canal was flowing with water, although you could see ice still a few inches below the water. To think that we were walking on the canal last night and now it is unsafe is crazy to me. Running was a bit challenging because some patches were icy and slushy, but it felt so good to run again. (Sorry – no pictures to share)

Finally, Jeff and I went out for a quick (romantic) date night to study our Dutch. Seriously, we listened to our Dutch CD in the car and drove around to find a place that was open on Sunday to grab a drink and do our homework. We found a great local bar, and made friends with Ike, our cute Dutch waitress who was thrilled to help us learn. She was so much fun and kept coming back between helping other guests and telling us the informal equivalents to the formal sayings we were learning. We liked the atmosphere of the local pub and restaurant that has been in Amstelveen for 125 years, but OMG, the place smelled like an ash tray and no one was smoking. I think it’s because of all the heavy wood and rugs as table cloths that have absorbed years of smoke and never have been cleaned. It reminded me of my Oma and Opa’s house growing up, because everyone used to smoke indoors with the windows closed in the 1970’s!! When we came home, the kids told us we stank! They were right, unfortunately! Too bad, because we really like the place and want to hang out there more often. We’ll see…
