Living Like a Kid

This my friends, is the secret to life. Playing and laughing and loving without fear. Not worrying about what your hair looks like or how many wrinkles you have or if your shoulder hurts. Just pure joy and being in the moment and catching some air.
Let’s grow down instead of up!

Are You Happy?

IMG_5537

Happiness is “simple.” We just have to follow this little flow chart.  I don’t think we should always expect to be happy though. Sometimes we need to wait until we’re ready to change again.  I think being aware that we are unhappy is healthy too.  We just have to decide how long we want to stay where we are.

If this was my own creation, I’d add another arrow leading from “Change Something” back up to the continuos happiness cycle, asking the question again after you change something to determine if that leads to happiness or not. Just because you change something does not necessarily lead to happiness again.  I think we have to always be asking the questions and making decisions, every day. We’re never done.

The only thing that is constant is change.

Today I was happy having a mother daughter date with my teenager. I love that she wants to be with me and that I want to be with her. I love her company and watching her grow up, although today I wanted to slow down time. We both went to get haircuts together. Her hair is curlier than mine and we both had ours blown out and smoothed, the way only a hairdresser can make it shiny and sleek.  Seeing her look so beautiful and grown up made me proud and awe struck again. She looked older and I think I looked a little younger, somehow. It’s weird to see me in her and her in me.

Celia made me think of parenthood this week with her FB post that said:  “When you become a parent, you stop being the picture and become the frame.”  Looking at Juliana today, I saw the picture developing and love my role as the loving boundary and frame.

I am happy.

Head in the Clouds

Today I’m thankful that I still have a kid who likes to play in the park.  Because of him, I sat outside on a bench before the sun set and enjoyed watching the clouds go by.

2015/01/img_4018.jpg
Sounds silly, but I enjoyed this moment and was thankful that we were there.

I loved watching him run around and climb up the play structures and jump off the slide with his friend.  They were carefree, just playing and running and chasing each other. Luckily I looked up from my phone and magazine to catch these moments before it was time to go.

I’m trying to slow down and do less and today was just the right balance.

I got to clean my house, play tennis and volunteer all before my kids came home. Once they came home, I actually enjoyed driving them to their appointments and making dinner with Jeff and sitting down to a family taco dinner and discussion over candle light.

As I slow down and do less, my kids are wanting to play more. I find this intriguing. Because they see me sitting, they want to come and sit on top of me and want all of my attention. I’ve been fighting this and then wonder why I’m fighting it.  I think by the end of the day I’m tired and am mentally worn out. It’s not that I don’t want to play with them, but I feel like I’m a dog and they’re little kids getting up in my face and I just want to snap.  How wrong is that? I know it and realize it and fought against it and then gave in.  Instead of biting them, I laughed and played and kissed their faces all over the place, so thankful that they wanted to be a part of me and celebrated our togetherness. I’m letting go of my expectation to sit quietly at the end of the day so that I can continue to enjoy the gifts they bring to my life.  I am thankful and tired.  Thank you to all the mamas who remind me to enjoy these moments because they go by so fast. I appreciate your wisdom.

And with that, I wish you a good night.  May all dreams come true.

Laugh Until You Cry

How often do you laugh so hard that you start to cry? I love love love this feeling.

Usually this happens to me when I’m overtired.  I start laughing at something silly and cannot stop. And the more I laugh, the more others around me start laughing which makes me laugh even harder because they are laughing at me and then they are so surprised that I’m laughing so hard that they start laughing harder too. It’s a contagious circle and I love it. I love this feeling, as long as I don’t really start to cry!

Tonight April was over for dinner with her family and we were playing Telephone around the dinner table with the kids. We were laughing so hard, I was afraid that someone might choke. I got such a kick out of watching everyone whispering in each others’ ears and laughing and being confused at what was said and watching and hearing the transformations occur.  I loved this game.

What makes you laugh so hard you start to cry? Tonight was good and my belly is sore from all that laughing.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

JoySpace

Everyone is so busy. We don’t have time because we are busy. Really?

I don’t buy that.  We create our own busyness and put up our own boundaries and definitions. Pa-lease! We are not really THAT busy. Yes, we are busy. But… there is always a but.

We create our own frameworks and our own ways of thinking. No one is really that busy that we don’t have time for joy. Think about it. Maybe the President is busy, but he still finds time to get to Hawaii, or to play with his dogs and kids. We’re not that busy. We’re just pretending to be and feeling really important.

What if we change our minds?

I was thinking about this today.  I was thinking about how we think and what we tell ourselves when we are alone.

What does your self talk sound like? Are you positively talking to yourself? Are you happy when you’re thinking? Are you thinking about finding and discovering joy in the little moments and minutes in between your busyness? Do you give yourself permission?

I do. I believe in the pursuit of happiness and being happy just because we can. Every day, even when we’re busy or sick or tired.  I think like that. Yes, I’m weird, but I’m pretty happy too because I choose to and want to be happy despite the chaos and craziness and imperfections of life. I want to fill in the cracks with joyspace. Yep, that’s what I’m calling it. I don’t know if it’s a word, but now it is. It’s mine and yours and we need to fill our joyspace in between our busy moments. It’s easy. You just have to be aware and to think about wanting to create and find joy when you have a little minute and then you surprisingly will. Trust me. It works. And it’s contagious. 🙂

I’ll share a few of my little moments of joyspace today while I was “so” busy.

I was shopping at Ranch 99 for stuff to make an Indonesian dinner tonight and this store is so fascinating. Look at the strange crackers I found…

These crab crackers were in the snack aisle…eeewe!  But they made me ponder and think how different we all are – from foods, to the way we spend our time, to the way we think and worship and play and all that good stuff. I couldn’t believe this was considered something yummy, but we all have different tastes and I found joy in appreciating this crab concept.

I also noticed the music that was playing while I was shopping. It wasn’t what you would typically hear in MUSAK – it was Chinese music and it was fitting and noticeably different and made me smile while I was shopping and weaving in and out of traffic… it’s very crowded in there!

When I came home with my groceries, I noticed all the different flowers blooming in my yard and felt the presence of spring!

It’s quickly approaching and made me smile.

Don’t forget to spring your clocks forward on Sunday!

20140306-211422.jpg
First rose bud has bloomed.

I can’t wait for longer hours of sunshine to fill more joyspace.  I loved noticing the changes in the garden.

I chose today to cook a fun and messy dinner and to not worry or rush into doing the dishes.

20140306-211519.jpg
Indonesian/ Chinese dinner just because…

The dishes are still sitting on the table, but I’ll get to them before I go to bed. Instead I filled the time helping Charlie with his math homework and laughing with Jeff at the dinner table with the kids. We made time for each other, even though we’re “so” busy. Everyone has time for 15 minutes together, even if we don’t think so.

So those are just some of the ways I found and created joys in between the busyness and chaos of life. It’s all how we look at it and choose to make time for joy.

How did you make time for joy today? What did your joyspace look like? I’m curious.

Wishing you peace and joy amidst your busyness! Namaste.

How to Be Happy

Time and INC. Magazine states that there are ten scientifically proven ways to be incredibly happy and I believe them!.

You can read the article here:

10-scientifically-proven-ways-to-be-incredibly-happy

The highlights, and I’ll be quick because I have to get to sleep (to be happy and healthy) are:

1. Exercise – 7 minutes could be enough! I wish you enough.

2. Sleep more. Working on it!!

3. Spend more time with friends and family. Money can’t but happiness.
Want to play?

4. Get outside more. 57 degrees is the magical temp.
I love California! Maybe because the weather adds to my happiness.

5. Help others. 2 hours per week or a 100 hours per year is the magical number.
Are you giving 2 hours per week?
What are you doing to give? I’m so curious!!
Does giving to your family count? Probably not, right?

6. Practice smiling.
Are you smiling now? You sure are cute! Fake it ’til you make it.

7. Plan a trip. Just the planning and visualization helps to create happiness.
Where do you want to go?
I want to go to Cabo and Hawaii with friends and family and smile and exercise and sleep and help rub suntan lotion on everyone.
Does that count as service?

8. Meditate. Focus and find clarity.
Be deliberate and know your intentions. Stop wasting time on Facebook and do something.

9. Move closer to work.
Interesting, huh? Makes sense. Who is happy with a long commute and traffic both ways?

10. Practice gratitude.
Thank you for reading and learning and sharing with me.

I am so happy now, and I bet you are too. Wasn’t that easy?

Good night!!
