Hello I am an American high school student who is working on an exploratory project on the Netherlands for my literature class, and I was wondering if you would mind taking a couple minutes to answer a few questions I have on Dutch culture. If you could reply anytime soon that would be amazing!
First question: What is it like socially in Amsterdam compared to other countries, specifically the US, if you have visited any others?
Second: What are some common leisure activities or hobbies that people/teenagers engage in in Amsterdam?
Third: What are some popular foods/types of food in Amsterdam?
Fourth: How developed or up to date is the technology in the Netherlands?
Thank you!
Hi Carter – Good luck with your exploratory project. I’d be happy to share my opinion on your questions. I lived there for a year and that was 2 years ago, so I don’t know if I’m the best one to answer, but I’ll share and you can decide what to do with it. First question – I found the Dutch to be friendly, but private. Once you’re invited in, you are warmly welcomed. They respect your privacy and want theirs respected as well. People are very social, out on their bikes together, sitting in cafes, outside when the sun is shining on the terraces, on their boats on the canals, celebrating Dutch pride in mass on King’s Day and during Gay Pride parade on the canals. There are lots of shared traditions like celebrating the arrival of Sinterklaas, celebrating birthdays by bringing your own treats to work to share with your co-workers, King’s Day, Saint Martin’s Day, etc. Second question: Leisure activities: #1 biking, exercising, boating, field hockey, coffee shops (pot), drinking coffee all day, drinking beer, ice skating on the canals, visiting museums, buying fresh flowers, shopping for groceries daily. Third question: Popular foods include cheese, bitterballen, poeffertjes (small pancakes), pannenkoken, stroopwafels, stamppot, Erwtensoep (pea soup), fries with mayonnaise, herring, olliebollen. Fourth: I don’t have an opinion on technology. Good luck!! – Tot Ziens. -Adriana
